There was an editorial in the Korea Herald today (6/19) written by a woman who had been randomly attacked in downtown Seoul, in front of witnesses who did nothing. If I were a woman, I'd pick up a copy of today's Herald or read it online.
Here's some advice for the ladies from your main man, MTK:
If you're being harassed, hit the guy in the Adam's apple (some men can resist a blow to the junk). He will go down. You better get the hell outta there, though. |

Please DON'T post a link to the story.
That would make it too easy to find! |

In psychological studies, people rarely will help you....especially if it is a crowded area. Time after time, most people will let the crime go on public with little or no assistance.
It's more a human thing rather than korean cultural thing. |

Oh look outside the window, there's a woman being grabbed
They've dragged her to the bushes and now she's being stabbed
Maybe we should call the cops and try to stop the pain
But Monopoly is so much fun, I'd hate to blow the game
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends
Riding down the highway, yes, my back is getting stiff
Thirteen cars are piled up, they're hanging on a cliff.
Maybe we should pull them back with our towing chain
But we gotta move and we might get sued and it looks like it's gonna rain
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends. |

Ladies, I used to teach self defense. The hardest thing women have problems with is actually hitting someone back. I would be wearing my full body armor and grabbing them, but they still couldn't throw a punch or kick. Ladies, take a class if you have time. If not, ask your boyfriend or another beefy friend to let you thorw on some gloves and practice punching them for a while. Use extra pads of clothing for armor, and he'll live. Get used to hitting people. |

How do people just sit back and watch it without acting? Is that common or something? |

This is the type of thing Stephanie White was talking about earlier, about how nobody helped her son when he died in the sauna. People don't get involved in strangers' lives, regardless of what's happening. It's not simply an indifference---for better or worse---but they can find themselves in big trouble if something goes wrong.
And has been said a million times, you shouldn't get involved if you're a foreigner. A woman getting beaten by her boyfriend will just turn on you for interfering. |

I dont know if I agree about the advice of punching the adams apple over kicking the groin.
Its a lot easier to make contact with the groin using a kick than a punch to the throat. And from someone who spars in thai boxing and occasionally gets knocked in the gonads, it is horrible |

What do you suggest Sherlock? Counting on the help of strangers in Korea?
Seriously, what would you suggest? |

It's a psychological phenomena that clearly shows how stupid we humans really are.
Tons of research about it has been carried out in the US and it always turns out the same....people don't do anything.
There was even a case in a public park in New York a couple of months ago in which a girl was being raped in broad daylight with literally hundreds of people around...and nobody did a thing.
The best thing you can ever do if you are attacked in a public place is to directly choose someone can call out at that person directly for whatever help you need.
example: "Somebody call 911" - everything thinks someone else will do it....and it's very easy to not get involved.
"You (while pointing) call 911 now!!! - that person has now been giving responsibility and can no longer easily blend into the crowd and ignore it. |

Well, let's see. According to the letter (From Susan Menadue-Chun), three women including a foreigner (Susan) were attacked simultaneously at major crosswalk in Seoul in broad daylight, and the attacker walked away with no one doing a thing.
I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're taking the piss with your seemingly disingenuous retort. It's been too long since I've seen you on this board so I can't recall if you're friend or foe. |
