I am considering pursuing a job teaching english in south korea and I have a question about the criminal background check. I have a possesion of drug paraphernalia violation on my record but it was NOT a criminal offense, it was a non-traffic ordinance violation. Would this preclude me from being able to teach in South Korea?

It depends on a few things.

First the state you live in. Is an ordinance violation considered worthy of disclosure on a criminal check? Some go that far down, others don�t.

Second is the school agency that will sponsor you. They might just see drug and dump you. Third is the government, they may do the same. I have found no list of what is considered an offense worthy of denial of visa status.

No real answer, but start by checking your state records department and see if it is part of the release of information. If it is, see if there is a process to get it expunged, or if it will be removed after a certain time.
