Man, I love the stuff. But I gotta go back to beer.

Last night, I drank two bottles. I don't remember a thing. I could have gotten naked, grabbed an axe, and killed the Pope for all I know.

I don't have a hang-over. The night is simply a blur.

That's why I never go out when I drink soju. I can down about 3 bottles but can't remember a damned thing. Best to stay at home.

Yeah I think many of us have turned to the at home party.

So much easier to have 4 to 5 good friends over, or go to a centrally located house when the soju will be flowing heavy.

Yeah, but they have to be REALLY good friends. I've been known to go to the dark side on a heavy buzz and say/do some things I wished I hadn't.

Soju is originally from Persia (brought over by the Mongols) -

Quote:
Soju was first distilled around 1300s during the Mongol invasions of Korea. The Mongols had acquired the technique of distilling arak from the Persians during their invasion of Central Asia/Middle East around 1256, then it was subsequently introduced to Koreans and distilleries were set up around the city of Kaesong. Indeed, in the area surrounding Kaesong, soju is known as arak-ju (hangul: 아락주).

these days it basically is poison to the body....

Quote:
From 1965 until 1991, in order to alleviate rice shortages, the Korean government prohibited the traditional direct distillation of soju from fermented grain. Instead, highly distilled ethanol from any source was mixed with water and flavorings to create diluted soju. Although the prohibition has now been lifted, cheap soju continues to be made this way.

If you drink soju -get regular liver-blood tests... You may be destroying more than just your memory...

Two is all I can do.

It should be illegal for a man to get that drunk on 2500 won.

I know this has been asked time and time again, but does anybody definitively know what is in soju that gets people so snackered? I can do a few shots of vodka and be cool, but half a bottle of soju and my thinking becomes fuzzy and my speech becomes slurred. Then there's the headaches and the apologies the next day. Too bad it's so cheap.

I've often wondered about this, being a regular quaffer of the stuff on weekends. However, a lot of Korean men drink soju 4, 5, 6 or even 7 nights per week. To varying degrees. They've been doing this for decades.

So does this country have a high rate of liver damage? Just wondering if someone really knew if soju damages the liver more than other alcohols.......

Yeah, now the family man who can't go out all night with others and spend all his money, I usually have a night or two a week with one or two bottles of soju at home. I mix it with pepsi, but anything works. It's amazing to rock a nice buzz on just a couple dollars within the comforts of your own home. Just gotta practice calling it quits after two. I can drink more for sure, but it's a bad idea.

A lot of older Koreans drank their way up the ladder within their companies, but now suffer liver and other health problems because of it. Working at Pagoda with adults showed me that. If the boss wants them to go out and drink they have to do it or no promotion. Not to mention they're probably eating samgyup sal half the time they're drinking soju. They better hike mountains on the weekend!

In the Philippines the poor people can drink this rum/whiskey (not sure which) called Generoso. A 1.5 litre bottle is probably $1.50. That'll get a whole group of dudes f***ed.
