I work for SMOE, and was told recently that I will need to go to a hospital early next month for a health check, even though I did the health check for immigration when I entered the country in March. I've asked a few SMOE friends, and no one has been told that they need to do likewise. Anyone out there know what this might be about? Also, what legal issue pertain to employers asking for health checks? Obviously the one on entry was required by the government. Under what conditions is an employee required to submit to a health check requested by the employer? |

I believe all public sector employees are required to take a health check once every 2 years. This has nothing to do with your immigration/visa health check. Ask your co-teacher if that's what they are talking about.
Then get ready for another exam.
I was just informed that my school requires these annually, why I do not know, so I will have to go and get one before the end of the calendar year 2009. ...Which is no big deal. |

I've been working for SMOE for less than 6 months, so I can't be due for the 2 year thing, right?
If this is something that everyone at SMOE has to do then that's fine. Likewise, if this is something that everyone at my school has to do, K teachers included, then that's fine. However, if my school is singling me out, essentially because of my race, then I have a BIG problem with it.
Thanks for the reply E ; ) |

It is something all teachers in public school have to do. I have seen the list of teachers who were required to get their health check done when they informed me about mine. It doesn't matter that you have been here only a short time. They are on a schedule for doing the health checks and you just happened along at the right time to be on the schedule. The school should reimburse you for the cost, (at least my school always has). It is a general screening and nothing major. Quite painless, and the only hard part was finding time to go down and get it done. I am in GEPIK, but I am sure the process is standard across the country for the PS health checks.
They are not targeting you, so please don't be alarmed. |

Thanks for the post Tob. Yeah, you're right, it is something all SMOE employees have to do. It's the government requiring the check, yes? Anyway, as long as everyone has to do it sooner or later I'm happy. |
