Yang became the first Asian-born player to win a major Sunday with a stunning performance in the PGA Championship, memorable as much for his clutch shots as the player he beat.
Woods was 14-0 when he went into the final round of a major atop the leaderboard. He had not lost any tournament around the world in nine years when leading by two shots.
None of that mattered to Yang, a 37-year-old South Korean who hit the shots everyone expected from Woods. Leading by one on the final hole, Yang slayed golfs giant with a hybrid 3-iron that cleared the bunker and settled 12 feet from the cup.
Yang made the birdie to close with a 2-under 70, giving him a three-shot victory when Woods missed yet another par putt and shot 75.
It was the second time Woods has finished runner-up in the PGA Championship at Hazeltine, both times to a surprise winner. Seven years ago, Woods birdied the last four holes and came up one short of Rich Beem. |

Yang hit an immaculate hybrid shot to 8 feet on the 18th. Beautiful, beautiful shot.
He won a really good championship too, leaderboard was packed with good players. Woods' putting was off as was his iron play. Yet to get back to his absolute best. |

Early in the round the announcer talked about Yang's home in Dallas, Texas and how his wife and children are settling in there.
Then after the win Yang makes sure to point out he lives on Jeju Island. I only know this through a translator, as the PGA tour member didn't speak any English after the win (though he demonstrated some ability the day before), his translator did all the talking.
Typical 'Look at how Korean I am' since there wasn't a flag handy to wrap himself in.
I like how the t.v. announcer said it'll be top headline in the South China Daily News
Anyways,... Y.E. Yang won a major, the first major PGA tourney he's ever been in, though the 37 year old 110th ranked golfer won a minor PGA tourney and an Asian match play event last year. Good for the little guy. He can retire on that. |

Sorry to correct you Hardy Boy but you are mistaken. Yang actually beat Tiger into second place once previously, at the 2006 HSBC World Golf Championship, a WGC event won last year by Sergio Garcia and by Phil Mickelson in 2007. He also beat a strong field to win this years Honda Classic and was 5th in the Buick Open.
Although he was born in Jeju he now resides in Seoul, but is based in the States during the PGA season, primarily in Dallas.
He's played in a few Majors before; the 2005 US Open (missed cut), British Open (missed cut) and USPGA (tied 47th). The 2007 Masters (T30), British Open (cut) and USPGA (cut). And this years Masters (cut). As USPGA champion he'll gain exemptions in to all of the Majors for a good few years to come.
What impressed me most was how cool he remained during his 3rd and final rounds, especially being paired with Tiger in the final group, a situation we've seen a few more established players be in and crumble. Congratulations to him. Will be interesting to see who from him, Lucas Glover (US Open champion) and Stewart Cink (British) goes on to even greater things... |

Folks can turn a golf game into a Bash Korea thread without batting an eye. |

There's certainly its opposite: The "Y.E. Yang is Better than Tiger Woods" thread on the General Forum.
Yang hit a great shot on the 14th that made Tiger trail for the first time in the whole tourney and followed that up with a very good shot later. Two nice shots on the back nine was the difference.
Yang said himself in the AP story that it may be his last win. He is 37. He has only won one PGA tourney ever previously. Plus that Asian match play event a few years ago.
Put things into context guys.
The Korean hype will be absurd. |

Could you imagine if it was any other country?
I mean England won the world cup in 1966 and there is rarely ever a mention of it
They also won the ashes a few years back, remember, the time before they got whitewashed by the aussies, they never bring that up either
They also publicised the hell outta winning the rugby world cup in australia, which would have been understandable except for the number of people who bashed rugby before it, then jumped on the bandwagon after the victory.
In Ireland we still remember world cup Italia '90 and we didn't even win the thing, or get to the semis.
A lot of our rugby players are dining out on winning the grandslam this year in the 6 nations. totally forgetting the shambolic performance in the rpevious world cup.
We were also following and hyping up padraig harrington in this event. Then again he was the current champion.
Every country publicises their own, and why not, it's better than concentrating on how currencies are being devalued and jobs are being lost |

He only started the game when he was 19. It is reasonable to suspect he might peak a little later. Also a return of 2 pga wins in 62 tries in PGA events is not terrible. Sergio Garcia has won 7 in around 190 events. Harrington has won 5 in 112, Casey 1 in 86.
He has a nice compact swing and he is long. I don't see any reason why we won't see more of him. |
