I renewed my contract this year with my school and went to the immigration office to get my visa renewed. I took all my papers and passport and fees and all they did was sign my ARC card.

I specifically asked "Don't you need to adjust the visa in my passport?" The woman (who, as a government bureaucrat, had been less than helpful) said no. I showed her my passport and visa which had an expiration date of this last March. I asked if this would cause a problem should I decide to leave the country, she said no problem.

So, my question is... She was wrong, right? This is a problem that some of you have faced and will be able to give me the appropriate help in resolving this? I don't want to end up getting held up at the airport on either my departure or return.

Thanks.

Unless Immigration law has recently changed, then no she was right.

The date on your ARC is the governing one in regards when you must leave the country, not the one in your passport.
You WILL need a multiple entry visa though if you want to leave and come back on the same visa.

I have the multiple entry visa, but it has expired. I left the country in January of this year and when I left, at the airport, they asked if I was coming back and when because the visa was going to expire the end of February. I told them I'd be back before then, and they said it was no problem. But leaving in July for a while, the multiple entry visa in the passport is expired, THAT's what I'm concerned about.

You're saying that that should not be a problem, right?

Ah, that clears things up...I assumed you were already on a multiple entry visa and was just checking...might have a problem here.

To the best of my knowledge you will need a multiple entry visa to come back. Is there any possibility that the person you talked to Immigration misunderstood you? According to your last post you asked would this present a problem if you left the country and she said no. Now that is correct as far as that goes. But she might have thought that you were not coming back on the same visa...I'd double check with Immigration on this one.

I WAS on a multiple entry visa. It has now expired. When I asked the women at immigration about it, I was renewing my work visa. I assumed that when I showed her the passport and asked about it, and she said "No problem" that she knew what she was talking about, but I just have this sinking feeling that no, she was, in fact, a moron.

My plans as of now are to call the airport immigration folks and see what they say.

Ugh, I hate bureaucracies...

If you go to the airport to leave they will not let you leave if you do not have a re-entry stamp in your passport. Been there, done that. You will have to pay at the airport, then pay again when you return and go to immigration for the multiple entry visa stamp again. Save yourself the trouble and do it before you have to go through the hassle. I know what I am talking about, because I had to do the same thing. Hearing the immigration people say "I know, no problem" is not the same as having them say "okay, that will be 'x' won for getting your new multiple entry stamp." Trust me I know what I am talking about.
