So I'm living an hour South of Seoul, and I might end up just traveling to somewhere in Korea for summer break, which is about a week end of July.

So, does anyone have any suggestions of some good places to visit then? I am hoping to find somewhere that may not be overrun with people and/or with the icky humid heat, if that is even possible?

Some possible contenders were: along the east coast beaches (Sokcho, Samcheok), Ulleungdo, the south coast islands (Oedo, Geojedo, Namhae, Hongdo?), or maybe even Jeju.

Any other suggestions?

Your list is a good one. I'd head to Seoraksan and hike along the mountain streams. Or I'd go to Jeju and ride bikes around the island.

not to be skeptic, but nowhere....that time of year is holiday week in Korea. Yes, holiday week! All 48 million plus pick up and go somewhere. No joke. Wish it was actually.

I will never forget coming back from Thailand that week and taking the train from Busan to Daegu. My goodness, packed in like sardines.
If you do choose to go, book your ticket and accomadations ASAP. Dont miss any of your trains or buses as well, cause you will be waiting for a while for the next available spot.

Beach is nice, but expect it to be very busy.

If you have have any suggestions for a quick (week or less), cheap (less than 2 million won for 2 people, but if it's less than 1 million, the better), less crowded trip with minimal hassle/paperwork (such as no visa paperwork needed, etc) outside of Korea for the end of july, feel free to suggest as well.

Boseong Green Tea Gardens in Jeollanamdo is worth a visit. To avoid the peak crowds on Friday night, either leave early, or the following morning. Be aware that typhoons could alter the decision for you, so be flexible. I'm thinking of going to Baengnyeongdo Island in the west sea islands. It's off the coast of North Korea, so I'll watch what Kim Jong-il does on July 4th.

The best place to be at the end of July is in Seoul. The streets and subways just a little less crowded...nice...

If you want to get out though, better book your tix soon if you want to find flights. You'll be paying a premium, but if you need a break, what can you do.

I suggest Taipei. Two hour flight. Flights are usually not full from Seoul to Taipei (as Koreans don't see Taipei as a true tourist destination). Great city, good shopping, beach area with pier and little ferry, historical stuff to see and do, night markets, outdoor public bathing pools (was fab!). Good transportation (subway, etc.), VERY RELAXED AND NICE PEOPLE!, decent Chinese cuisine, decent prices. Tallest building in the world -Taipei 101 building (still?), great desserts, REAL cake! Tourist visa on arrival.

I disagree about Taipei. That city was basically just a warmer and 15% cheaper version of Seoul except the people speak Chinese. I went there in Sept. 2007 and don't care to visit there again unless for biz or flight stopover.
