I was in Itaewon today shopping, and I noticed a massage parlor prominently displaying out front the prices for different services including a special massage. I'm new to South Korea so I was wondering if someone can clear this up for me. Are all places that offer special massages really fronts for prostitution, or are some of these specials just their way of saying the massage is high quality?

That was likely a legit massage place, if it was on main street Itaewon. The shady ones are on "the hill."

Most barber shops with frosted windows that you can't see inside of are actually fronts for prostitution. There are also anma (massage) parlors, room salons, naughty noraebangs, yogwans, telephone sex places.... oh gosh.. the list is endless.

Prostitution was over 3 percent of the GDP last year... maybe higher. You can't walk 5 minutes without seeing loads of this stuff.

Yeah it was down at the end of main street near McDonalds (on the opposite side of the road). I figured it might be legit, either that or they had a lot of balls not-so-covertly advertising sex in broad daylight. I just thought I'd ask y'all. Actually, I went down one of the side streets with the markets near McDonalds. There was a lot of noise but as I got farther down the street it got really quiet and deserted (no doubt because it was during the day). I saw a barber shop down in that area. It only had 1 pole so I thought it was legit, but it had all its windows and doorway covered with blankets so maybe it wasn't. The change from noise to near silence was really creepy and I almost expected someone to jump out and demand I hand over my wallet, so I just went back up to the main street area.
I'd rather avoid "the hill" area all together. Because I don't want to get mixed up with that kind of stuff. Can anyone tell me where it is? Not so I can go there (despite what some may think), but rather so I don't accidentally wander into it by mistake.

Here is a map of bars in Itaewon which shows where "the hill" is:

What is "D'Stairs B" in the 3-alley area, and why would it be off-limits?

Isn't there a crackdown on prostitution lately? Wouldn't hooker hill be the first place they hit?

Well, it is bringing a lot of money into the economy....

Never have I felt unsafe in any of the streets or alleys of Itaewon or anywhere else in Korea...even after dark. Do what you feel is safe, but you're probably safer than you think so long as you have your wits about you. I'd suggest you go exploring without worrying about avoiding certain areas because you're afraid of getting mixed up with the law...just don't buy yourself a hooker. If you avoid all these places, you're missing out on seeing a pretty interesting side of Korea.

"I don't want to get caught up in that kind of stuff" means you can't go into a shopping mall without buying something.

two things.

first there is a place in anyang that offers thai massage, i went in there with a girl from work a while back to have a look at the menu. it looks completely legit... the menu includes thai massage, hot stone massage, deep tissue, foot massage, etc. nice lobby with some new age music and a water fountain.

so i ask, "when do you close?" answer "we're open 24 hours." is there any way that a massage place open at 3 am is not a 'special massage' type place?

second, i was walking home on saturday night around 1 or 2 pm with my GF a week or two ago, and went down a side alley very near the subway station and the food district, maybe two blocks from that main part of the city. there were girls sitting on chairs outside "red light" rooms in skirts. i thought i was in Amsterdam for a moment, it was that blatant. mind you just around the corner there are your typical spinning barber poll, a norae-'singles' bar, phone room, etc, but at least these places make a half-@$$ed attempt to cover it up.

how can this exist? its only 2 blocks away from a police station, and out in plain red-neon-light for anyone to see!

law and order in this country is a joke.

Last time I was there, walked down Hooker Hill to do some window shopping, but ended up getting pulled in a little room by a pretty good looking K-chic. Good times. Also went to a room salon there drunk out of my mind and got the best looking girl who would go home with me and fell asleep as soon as we got to the love motel while she was getting "ready." Woke up a few hours later with $250 missing from my wallet. That was one expensive love motel nap.
