|
|
I've just been "guaranteed" by my recruiter a position with SMOE for this fall and that a contract will be coming in the next week. Is anyone else having trouble getting their contract issued in a timely manner?
Mostly, I'm looking for details as to when I will need to report to Korea. I won't purchase my tickets until AFTER I've received and signed my contract (am I right in this?) but would still like an idea about the general timeframe so I can roughly plan out the rest of my stay here in the States.
If anyone HAS a contract already for SMOE this fall and knows of the specific details (i.e. dates of orientation, date of arrival to Korea, etc.) that would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!
Also, is it really fishy that my recruiter would tell me there is a guaranteed spot for me and not have a contract issued?? |

You're pushing it a bit close for the deadline. Orientation starts August 24th. Supposed to arrive August 23rd. So hopefully you get that contract ASAP, get your notice of appointment within a week of you signing and returning it to them, and then head up to your korean consulate. it's not too late, but it's gonna get hectic and the airfare probably wont get any cheaper.
Did you interview with someone at SMOE?
Is your recruiter named George Henry? |

No, I haven't interviewed with SMOE directly I've gone through my recruiter and yup that's him. Do you know him? Any advice? What will I need to go to the Korean consulate for? I already have an F4 visa. I was under the impression that the orientation was August 17th and that I needed to be in Korea by August 14th. Are you sure about the dates of Aug. 23rd? |

You need to go through another recruiter. I don't think George Henry is an authorized SMOE recruiter. If you haven't interviewed with someone at SMOE, then you do not have a job at SMOE. |

I cant think of the name off the top of my head but if you search for the name of the company that he owns and a few threads should come up.
(try the initials of the company too) |

Yes, I would concur with the other posts in terms of SMOE and not George Henry (I don't know who he is).
If your recruiter confirmed an appointment with you to interview with SMOE, I think that you might have a very slim chance of still getting into the program. I interviewed last week, and feel comfortable about getting all my documents in, but I already had most of them assembled.
However, if you don't have a set appointment, I would probably start looking at other positions. As others have mentioned, it is getting pretty close to orientation. My recruiter told me that I was in the last batch to be accepted to SMOE, and that the program was not accepting any more applications.
If it helps, I heard a friend of a friend, i.e. not the most reliable source of information, is applying to EPIK for this Fall 2009. I find that highly suspect considering I was told that it was closed by 3 different recruiters back in June. If you are set on teaching in public schools, it might be worth checking out. |

Is orientation at the Hyundai Training Center for August 2009?
Does it really start on August 24th? I've read how some recruiters are telling teachers to come several days earlier.
Anybody have an address or website for the Hyundai Training Center? I'm sure going to miss the ease of finding things on Google in the U.S. |

Yes, SMOE orientation is at the Hyundai Training Center. It is located in Yongin, which is about 1-1.5 hours south of Seoul. That's about all I know--I don't know the address. I'm not sure what you're looking for, but from what I've read the center has an internet cafe of sorts, convenience store, and gym. If you're looking for stores in the area, you should know now that they forbid you from leaving the center. However, that's not to say that there aren't people who still do. Also, you can go on YouTube and find some short clips taken during the orientation. You don't see a whole lot, but enough to know that the rooms are small (roughly 3 beds lined up fairly close to each other per room).
In terms of the date, I know my orientation is on August 24th. However, they asked that I arrive at the Incheon Airport on August 23rd from 10am-4pm, which is when shuttle buses to the center will be provided.
Although I have read of another date for those who were moved from EPIK to SMOE. Also, someone posted that the incoming SMOE class is so large this year that they are splitting the groups into two; one group will have orientation the first half the week and the other in the second half.
In any event, the consensus among the SMOE Fall 2009 teachers on the forums echo the 24th date.
One post I came across might explain why recruiters are telling teachers to arrive early. Apparently, it used to be that you could arrive early and find out or meet your school. According to the author, this is no longer an option; s/he is also the author who I got the splitting orientation comment from. |
