Al Pacino is a good actor. I think most would agree. He has been in two or three bad movies that he could not save.

Nicholas Cage is not a good actor. Many might disagree. But I like a few of his movies anyway. The only one I have seen where he really fit was Leaving Las Vegas, where his emotion worked well.

Ben Affleck sucks. But Good Will Hunting at least is good.

I guess sometimes it isn't just the actor. The story has to be good.

Any other ideas?

It's the director that makes all the difference. The energy between those two has to be good so that the actor gets a clear message what he should be doing on the screen.

good acting won't save a bad movie and a good movie can be ruined by bad acting.

The best recipe in the world will taste bad if you use bad ingredients.

The best ingredients are wasted on a bad recipe

I hear for the past several years he's been trying to sell country music albums.

Jodie Foster was in some strange, not-so-great films before she won her Oscars. Off the top of my head, I remember "Foxes," "Hotel New Hampshire," and "Stealing Home." In all of them, Jodie rose above the material and made the movies at least somewhat watchable.

Action films have different rules. The plot is really just an excuse to go from one action scene to the next. If the action is good and stuff gets blown up the plot and acting can suck and the movie can still be enjoyable. Throw in some pretty females and Bob's your uncle.

A great part in a movie will make an average actor seem great

Oh, I saw "The Brave One" recently. Had never heard of it. It was good and she is very talented. I dislike focusing on actors really, and just like a good show. A good show should make one forget who the actors are, in my opinion, kind of like a well officiated ball game where no one remembers who the umpires were. Yet, sometimes the actors are crucial. When well cast in a good story, they can certainly make a lot of difference.

Right, but that's usually due to the director and his interpretation of the screenplay or from the director allowing the actors to take their interpretation of the character and how said character would act in a situation. Johnny Depp, for example. puts so much depth and thought into his characters that you know you are always watching Johnny Depp but thinking about his character. Damn, I lost myself.

Ya know... I always though that was a cheap cop out. She wasn't great, but there were many problems with that movie.

The script tried to play off too much like the ending of the first moving. There were problems with budgeting which led to the casting of George Hamilton (due to being to cheap to pay Robert Duvall). In all... the movie was rushed to production and it came off that way.
