I tried to use the search function, but Dave's is acting screwy again. And I'm not sure if this belonged in the FAQ or General so if not, feel free to move it to the appropriate place.

Now, I've heard conflicting things about getting a phone. Some have told me they're really expensive for foreign people, but others have said they are cheap or even free.

Others have said you have to sign a 200,000 won deposit, while others say you don't need to, and only have to pay for an activation fee.

Could you please tell me your cell phone experiences here? I really need one, but I will not shell out a 200,000 won deposit for my phone. I can go to Seoul to get one, no problem, so any areas to go would be nice, too.

I have a contract phone from SK Telecom. I had to pay a 200,000KRW deposit. I've had no problems with them; but, I'm hearing over and over lately that LG Telecom is the best choice for us waygooks. It seems they're welcoming our business by not requiring a deposit and even offering a free or discounted phone. Take your ARC and passport with you. If you can bring a Korean translator with you, all the better. Good luck.

Bought a used phone near Busan Station for 30,000 and usually put 20-30,000 won a month on it to keep the service going.

Get a contract with LG. They don't require security deposits and the cell phone I got was only W60,000. Of all the companies I talked to they were the only ones that didn't require a security deposit from foreigners.
