Hi all-

For those of you who live in the Jeonju area, how much of a pain would it be to live in Iksan? I am planning to do research in Jeonju, but would like to do some comparative research in a smaller place like Iksan, and it seems like there are a lot of schools there where my husband could work (and maybe there are more choices of affordable apartments?). How long does it take between the two, and what does Iksan have going for it on its own?

I just answered almost an identical question 2 weeks ago.

The two cities are 30, maybe 40 minutes apart. So close that almost as soon as you leave the city limits of either, you can see the other city in the distance. Most of your time is spent just getting out of the city traffic. The bus fare is 2500 won, and it's the same for the train. If you miss the last bus or train at night, taxi fare is only about 20,000 won.

Iksan is a smaller town of around 300,000, which is about a third(I think) of Jeonju. Iksan is nice and has most amenities, but for diversion we go to Jeonju, which has more to offer.

The one thing Iksan has that Jeonju does not is a KTX stop. That is a nice thing to have if you want to get out of town, say to Seoul, quickly and conveniently.

One more thing. Many people do commute every day between the 2 cities. It is pretty common.

I live in Jeonju and have taken my 125cc motorcyle between the 2 cities numerous times and it usually takes 25 minutes depending on city traffic. Once you hit the highway, it's never very crowded-but then again, I've never really driven it during rush hour. Good luck.
