He guys

I got a bit of a weird problem

Prelude: Old comp mainboard got fried, together with videochipset, so I got a complete new set

Currently I am trying to recuperate office documents, but I am unable to locate them. I find everything else except those.

They were stored via the "Desktop" , either on the Desktop or in a folder on the Desktop.

Can anyone give me hints on what happened and how I can rescue those documents

Cheers

I probably need to add that the old comp still had XP and the new comp is Vista Ultimate

Are you using the old "xp" drive as a secondary drive and pulling files off of it?

The desktop folder is in C:\Documents and Settings\(Username)\Desktop

Of course, "C" drive will be different. Maybe they are there?

That is the damn thing I can't find them there.

I also turned hidden folders off

Let's get the stupid questions out of the way:

Have you done any wildcard searches on the d:/ (slave) drive? Like "*.doc"?
Can you see other files that were on your (old) desktop?
Since the drive seems to be letting you browse it, have you tried re-using it as a master to see if the desktop file/folders come back?

If the answer to all of those is "yes", and the files are still missing, I'd recommend downloading and a copy of "knoppix" -

http://www.knoppix.net/get.php

it's a free linux distro that'll boot and run in the system memory (it'll look and function amazingly like a windows desktop, so don't let the "linux" name scare you). If there's some windows-based reason why the files/folders aren't showing up where they should, knoppix should be able to work around it and show the files anyhow.

I even did *.* and looked at ALL the files

Mhh yes maybe re use it as a master that is a good idea i'll try that

If that doesn't work, then I will try knoppix

I found a program that read byte for byte the entire hard disk.

Took itself 2 days to do it.

It could not find the files back.

During the same time period, I was able to rebuild all the data that was on that file .....

grmbl

thx!
