i have a few WTFs on this contract i would like some input on:
12. Vacation
The employee will receive 7 paid vacations days per year. These are the days when school will not be in session. Days in which the employee does not regularly work (i.e. Saturday and Sunday) are not to be considered as part of the vacation period.
10. Airfare
The employee will be provided with round trip airfare to from the Airport nearest their home to South Korea. The airfare will be provided to the employee prior to departure to South Korea. In the event that the employee decides to terminate this contract prior to six months of completion for reasons not in accordance with this contract, they will be required to reimburse the employer the full amount of the airfare. After six months the employee will reimburse the employer half of the airfare.
9. Housing
The employer will provide the employee with a furnished studio consisting of, but not limited to, basic appliances. (TV, Cook top, Refrigerator, Washing machine, Bed, Linen, Table, Chairs, Kitchen utensils,). The studio will be provided at no cost to the employee with the exception of utilities, such as TV, gas, and telephone bills. If the studio is shared, then the bills incurred will be split between the persons sharing the studio. The employer will ensure that the studio is clean. In return for a furnished studio, the employee agrees to respect and care for the studio with the exception of normal repairs. Any outstanding bill belonging to the employee will be the sole responsibility of the employee. In the event that the studio is shared, the outstanding bill will be split evenly between all residents of the studio.
"And the director wants to let you know that you have to pay about 10,000 Korean won a month as a maintenance of housing."
1. Job Description
The employee will work for the employer as an English Instructor. The duties of the employee will be as follows:
a. Curriculum design and implementation.
b. Development of educational programs and materials.
b. Grading and evaluation of students.
c. Reviewing and reporting of students.
d. Attendance at teachers meetings and workshops.
e. Attendance at Contest four times a year on weekend.
f. Other activities directly related to teaching.
g. And those (a~f) are not subject to compensation.
so... uh, in addition to me agreeing to repay half my airfare and pay my utilities i also have to pay upkeep (maintenance) on an accomodation that is never declared a single or a shared... wtf?
i can only take my vacation when the school is closed...wtf?
and there's a ton of other stuff "a-f" that i will not be compensated for... again, wtf?
any input on this? it seems kind of shady, but i have no real experience with which to judge it by. |

My housing is 20 a month, so you're both lucky.
I'd be concerned with it not saying you don't have single housing. It specifically says "studio," and if you were to live in a studio apartment with another person you might as well punch yourself in the face. Studios are very, very small.
At my school I can only take vacation when the school is closed.
I wouldn't quibble about A-D, but I might take issue with E since it's a weekend activity and you won't be compensated for it. If you are allowed input into the contract, that would be one thing I'd look at.
Otherwise, it looks like a pretty good contract. Those things aren't particularly life-threatening, although if you end up with a roommate there might be some actual lives threatened if your apartment is small.
If anyone who knows about these things/could make fun of the OP and/or myself (read: Gord), be sure to chime in and make me look like an idiot. I like looking like an idiot. It makes the children laugh. |

I wouldn't worry. It looks fine. The A-F thing is just because some teachers forget that they are on salary and believe that the second they aren't in a classroom they are on their own time. |

Nothing to be scared of there, except for the housing. You need to clarify, single or shared. Not maybe! The occasional contest, in my experience it has included a very nice lunch or dinner. |
