Can anyone give some advice. What happens if you get fired before the first six months are up? Do you still have to pay back the air ticket and settlement fee or is the school/EPIC/GEPIK responsible for paying your ticket home.
What reasons do schools find to fire people?
Any advice about been fired would be appreciated. |

Most of this should be outlined in your contract.
Usually schools will state the teacher must complete 6 months or you have to pay back the air ticket.
Reasons for firing are far too numerous to discuss. For the most part, if the school doesn't think your being an effective teacher, they can let you go. You should be given ample notice of this, usually 30 days.
Just go over your contract for exact procedures and rules. If the school doesn't want to follow it, then you need to go to the labor board.
Good luck. |

Getting fired from a public school job has nothing to do with being a teacher. For the most part, it's if they like you or not. |

Never truer words have been spoken...I can attest to that 100%. It's pretty much a popularity contest and how well you can play "house-slave/Uncle Tom. |

Legaly you're entiled to a months notice or a months salary. You can get a letter of release to get a new job. Also if your are working in a public school you might want to contact an English speaking supervisor in the Kyoyukcheong( Office of education) find out why you were fired and request a transfer. There's a good chance that you can get moved if you show an interest in improving.
If they say your class was boring it means you were'nt a dancing monkey. |

Yes, you have to pay back the airfare and settlement fee.
The reasons can vary alot. If you showed up to work late reguarly that could be a reason. So could sleeping with the principals wife. What did you do to bring this about? |

Another one who understands reality. In order to be liked, you must be fully aware of the concept of face and know what the effects are of causing someone to lose face among his/her peers. Face is gold to Koreans, and you have to respect this or feel the wrath.
In short, the following activities may result in face loss and your being disliked:
1. In-class participation (those who are high up may be exposed in class as not being knowledgeable and thus not so high and mighty).
2. Assigning homework (those who are high up may be exposed outside of class as not being knowledgeable and thus not so high and mighty)
3. Disciplining students (those who are high up may resent being forced to adhere to the same standards as their lower-rung peers)
Treating your students equally, without regard to FACE, is taboo. You must take face into consideration if you are to be liked and, ultimately, are to remain employed at a job.
The notion that 'all men are created equal' is an idea the Americans dreamed up and believe. Few other people in the world believe this. Most people in the world, and this includes most Koreans, think a person's place in society from birth to death depends on his genetic heritage and can not be changed. Not through hard work. Not through education, for the most part. |
