My, does EPIK ever know how to make veteran teachers feel good about their career progression here. While I've been a 'guest teacher' this past year, I'll now be an 'assistant [보조] teacher' for the coming year (but with a 2-300,000 pay increase for assisting rather than being a guest). Well, I suppose this means no more lesson planning, then, as I'll merely have to assist? It's interesting because last year going from a foreign language teacher to a guest teacher made no difference whatsoever - if anything I just got more responsibility.
I'm surprised that EPIK hasn't followed the Japanese model of calling FTs 'trainers', just so that it's extra clear who isn't a real teacher. Oh well, thankfully out in hicksville at a private-public school it's the principal who decides what you really are. |

While I see your point, I'd like to say that it seems like they're trying to emulate the uni system. I can't speak for all colleges, but at my school it went "guest lecturer," "assistant professor," "associate professor," etc. Although you may be right, you may also be reading too much into the designation. |

It's what the job title is called in the contract (영어보조교사). |

I looked up 보조 in my dictionary and found it interesting that one of the possible definitions of it is 'supplementary'. I think that would actually be an excellent term to use for the role we should be playing, but I doubt that's what whoever wrote the contracts was thinking.
At any rate, I'm pretty sure that I'm the only person at my school who even noticed the change in term, so it's not like it really matters. It just kind of annoys me that EPIK would see a need to redesignate us as 'assistants' when it's obvious that at many schools that's far from the role we actually play. |

This new job designation brings with it an extra 20-30 man won though,so it does matter rather a bit as EPIK is currently capped at 2.7 .
Such a pay jump puts you in a similar standing to KTs. Is this recognition by the school ie can spend their budget as they see fit or is it an initiative alongside that of the common EPIK job title and salary?
In other words, is this career progression-recognition and paywise-closer to what a KT would receive rather than the 2.7M capped, never move forward EPIK deal? |

Are job titles important in Korea? |

It's capped a bit above what a contract Korean teacher can make, unless they do a *lot* of overtime. However, it's still no where near what a tenured KT can make as a base salary, not to mention bonuses. |

So this new job description goes beyond that of the standard EPIK deal then? |

No - there have just been some changes in how my school district deals with EPIK. |

I'm just glad that they don't label us as "The English 원숭이." |

Until there is anything like a standardised curriculum and formal assessment the job will remain facetime with whitey with varying degrees of success. |
