SCI KOREA
WORK - CAMP SEASON 2009
JUCHEON Utopia town Work Camp
Date: From 25th July to 2nd August.
Number of volunteers: 30

General Information on SCI
Service Civil International (SCI) SCI Korea is a voluntary service organization with 4 branches in different provinces in Korea; it was established at the end of 1960s. Our aims are to promote peace, international understanding, solidarity, social justice, sustainable development and respect for the environment. SCI believes that all people are capable of living together with mutual respect and without recourse to any form of violence to solve conflicts.

JUCHEON Utopia town
It is a small rural town in Jin-An City in Jeolla Province (South-West Korea). Its a very clean and pro-environmental town to keep whose aim is to promote natural sustainability. The theme of this Work camp is Nature, Art, Cultural exchange and community.
JUCHEON town is famous not only for its natural places such as valleys, forest and springs, but also historical places such as stone towers, temples and Great tombs. Its community has many social programs for agriculture, environmental protection, festivals, carpentry and renovations.
The work camp will help-out the community and encourage the local people to think more about the environment.

Work Camp Project
- Education

Usually, the education in rural communities lags behind that of urban areas. One of our aims is to improve this situation. We will assist The Home School Center to prepare a cultural experience program. The following photos show the work site for these activities.

- Library-Making Project
The Library Making project is an effective way for the communitys children to be given more chances to read and learn. It gives children an opportunity to study by themselves. Building a small library at the Home School Center will aid in this process. All the volunteers will work together in this program.

- Renewal of the Town Environment

We are all influenced by our environment; so at this camp, we try to improve this rural community to better their circumstances. There are many things we can do at this camp, such as gardening, wall painting, renovations, etc. that will help in achieving this aim. You can take part in them. Ultimately, this summer camp will contribute to the development of the center and the community. So, one of our aims in this project is collaborating with local people. Communication with the residents is important during this camp.

Study Part
- Carpentry Experience
Do you have any carpentry experience? During this camp, you can participate in a youth-oriented carpentry program provided by Community Center. By experiencing this program, you will not only learn about carpentry, but also learn a little more about the local culture and how education programs are managed.

Free time
Youll be working 5 to 6 hours a day. Summer in Korea is very hot and humid, so you may feel this work is a bit tough. But, you will have free time after work in which you can enjoy the valleys and nearby streams. There are many other natural attractions near the camp. Also, a local festival will be held at the end of this camp. This will be a good chance to experience Korean culture.

Work Camp Location
