So here's my tenative bali itinerary. Any comments?
Day 0 - arrive at Bail in the late evening, head to Ubud hotel. Ubud night.
Day 1: explore ubud. see monkey forest, do a spa? eat at Ibu Oka. ubud night
Day 2: explore ubud. maybe do walking tours? maybe bike tour? see a show at night? ubud night
Day 3: ubud day trip = mt batur and batur lake, tegalalang rice paddies, goa gajah temple, bali bird park, bali reptile park, elephant park. ubud night.
Day 4: ubud day trip - Bedugul, lovina? gitgit waterfall. tanah lot sunset. ubud night.
Day 5: travel to nusa lemongan or gilis from ubud. (Can't decide on which place, would it be easy to find accomodation in Gilis if we walk in or should we prebook?). night in either of those places (whichever we chose)
Day 6: all day explore gilis or nusa lemongan, depending where we go
Day 7: Morning expore Nusa lemongan or gilis. Afternoon travel to sanur. Sanur night.
Day 8: Daytrip to Kuta/Legian. Dinner at Jimbaran. Uluwatu sunset. Sanur night.
Day 9: Day in Sanur. Airport in the evening.
Comments:
So I was wondering for Day 7 - if we should hire a driver or take cabs for that day, which one is better then?
Days 3 and 4 - I tried to separate the NW from Ubud and the NE from Ubud into two daytrips, but if they can be combined, or if Day 3 is too busy, let me know. The elephant, reptile, bird parks - I'm not sure exactly where they are, so I am not sure if I should put them into day 3 or 4.
And we're not into nightlife, more into local culture and natural scenery. |

Avoid Mt. Batur like the plague--there's really nothing to seeing a volcano unless it's erupting, in which case you want to be elsewhere anyway. Don't say you haven't been warned.
That, and the only places to eat are atrocious tourist traps that serve moldy food, and buffets from the 80s--possibly still some food at the bottom of the pile from years ago.
You can charter a van to take you around if you get a map, and figure out exactly what you want to pay, and they'll stick around until you want to leave.
You should also avoid the 'coffee plantation', which is a load of crap--there's no coffee growing anywhere near it, and it's just a place that demands you buy their overpriced wares. Nothing you won't be able to find at the Carrefour in town. |

I'd get a connecting flight to Lombok, Mataram and take in the Gilis first then work back from there. Maybe even take a day in Senggigi. |

I thought Kintamani lookout on the outer slopes of Batur was well worth a look, although I haven't been down inside the main crater wall, or on the lake:

There are bus tours from Ubud to most attractions around Bali. The Ubud Museum was also worth seeing. The monkeys in Bali will grab anything they can get their hands on: water bottles, hats, sunnies, & even my camera battery in Monkey Forest, Ubud. The monkey ripped off the plastic cover, stuck the battery in its mouth, got an electric shock, & spat it out. I gingerly retrieved it with a tissue, washed it in clean water, dried it, & returned it to my camera bag. True story!
It's also possible to get the ferry from Padangbai to Lombok, which takes around 4 hours. I flew back with Merpati Airlines, but they've long since gone out of business. |

While I wish they would, I can assure you they haven't. Flew them out that way very recently whilst on business. |
