So my buddy and his sister are going to Bangkok for a week the beginning of August. We were looking for some advice from people who have been to Bangkok before on things such as best parts of town to stay(nightlife), hotel costs or name of places you recommend staying, and cool stuff to do, things of that nature. Also was wondering the best and closest beach areas from Bangkok to visit for relaxation and also for good nightlife. Thanks and any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Two VERY important tips:
a) ALWAYS examine the hands.
b) ALWAYS look for Adam's apples.
If you always do these two things you will most likely be fine.
Important note:
This is advice is not nearly so important for your friend's sister.
EDIT: Also remember that if you leave the country and return, you will be forced to do a one week quarantine to make sure you don't have swine flu. Make sure your boss is cool with this. |

I like staying in the Rama IV area because it is near Lumpini Park, and close to Silom (night life) without being in Silom. The Pinnacle hotel is near the subway and near Lumpini park.

Other people may recommend other parts of Bangkok to stay, it is a big place with lots of various favorite places.
Personally I hate the Sukumwit area because of the constant barrage of shady characters. If you go to Sukumwit, just walk along saying no, no, no and youll be fine.
Well, the closest beach to Bangkok with nightlife is Pattaya. Good hotel deals and lots to do there. But Pattaya is for people on 3-4 day vacations. You have time to go someplace nicer. Ko Samet and Hua Hin are near Bangkok, but no nightlife.
Maybe you could check on flying to Ko Samui or Phuket (Patong Beach). Ko Samui will have better weather (less rain) in August, but the flight is only on Bangkok Airways and is expensive. Phuket may have more rain, but flights are really cheap on Air Asia (fine airline). |

I wouldn't stay a week in Bangkok. You'll spend half your vacation stuck in traffic. I'd go to Phuket. There are airlines in Thailand that will fly you down there from BKK for a fair price. One is Air Asia. One-Two-Go and Air Andaman are two others. You should be able to find a good deal in August at one of these. One-Two-Go usually has special offers going on, and is usually cheapest of those going to Phuket. You'll spend from 2200-5200 baht round trip if you leave from the old airport in BKK. I'm not sure if Air Asia flights leave from Don Muang these days, though.
As far as accommodations go, the old rule applies. The farther away from the sand you are, the cheaper the room charge. There are several good hotels in the city of Phuket that offer rooms for 500 baht a night. You can also find plenty of nice beach-front rooms down on Patong and Kata for a premium. It's all you. |

We spent 10 days in Bangkok and enjoyed it greatly. I highly suggest staying in the Lub D hostel (it's like staying in an Ikea and in a great location). From there you'll be able to book many excursions via the hostel (or other tourist agencies) and venture off on your own without much problem.
Good luck and enjoy your stay! |

Come on. You missed it? Korea has built a huge isolation complex that dwarfs even the NASA assembly building to house all the quarantined. They put it where the old gate in Seoul used to be that burned last year. Somebody help me out here, but I believe this building is like, what, 110 stories?
When one arrives at the two big Korean airports, he is herded to this building via the brand new swine flu elevated train system. Rumor has it both the new isolation ward and the EL were built using Burmese slave labor. The EL is ultra fast, I have to add. It can go over 400 km/hr. Korea is beaming over this engineering triumph. |
