So my purse was stolen last night in Itaewon. I wake up this morning with a text message from my bank saying my debit card had been used for 740,000 won...wonderful! I called my director and she reported my card stolen. I then get 3 text messages in a row that I can't read, but I'm thinking the person tried to use my card again for 318,000 won, but because I reported it stolen, the card was declined. The bank told my director that I may not get the money back because I can't prove it wasn't me who spent the money.
This really friggin sucks.
Anybody else have anything similar happen? Any advice??

Track down the shop-room salon(time, amount)??-and see the receipt. Then you can check the signature used and take it from there, the thinking being that:

1, A person signing it makes it fraud
2, Did the place make any effort to verify the signature( often places don't)

Wow, can I ask where you were last night in Itaewon?

My friend and I and one other girl all had our wallets stolen at SoHo's in Itaewon. They both just lost cash and subway cards, but I had 2 U.S. credit cards, 1 U.S. debit card, my Korean debit card, my Korean ATM card, my ARC card, and my U.S. social security card in my wallet.

Yeah, yikes.

So basically I spent the early morning hours in a PC Bang making a million calls to get all my cards cancelled. I did it immediately after I saw it went missing. My U.S. cards were fine and my Korean debit card only had a small charge from a bar in Itaewon.

I'm still trying to figure out what exactly to do, but here's what I recommend.
-File a police report.
-Get ALL of your cards cancelled (what else did you have in your wallet?)
-Take your coteacher or director with you to the bank tomorrow and explain what happened.
-Pray you have some kind of fraud protection

Best of luck,
politica

I am lost here?? How does a Debit card get used if it is stolen? (its not a credit card)

did you have your pin written down in your purse with the card?

I can't understand it.

If the debit card has a visa or master card logo, it can be used just like a credit card. No pin number is needed, and the $ is withdrawn from the checking account.

I've also noticed that no one here ever asks for ID.

Yes, you can use a debit card at stores without a pin. If you want to take money out of the ATM, you need the pin.

I don't recall ever being asked for ID when using a credit card in the U.S.

No one has EVER checked my signature. They give the card back as soon as it's been swiped. If it was stolen I'd be screwed unless I could cancel it straight away.

It'll be a check card which works like a credit card in stores but only uses the cash available in your account. In ATMs it works like a debit card. You can't seem to use a regular debit card with a pin in a store here (or IBK doesn't seem to have a card like that anyway).

OP, this is only a third hand story, but I did hear that this happened to someone who worked at my school before me. Apparently he got his money back, but it took awhile to verify that it wasn't him that spent it. Good luck! And I'd like to know which bar you were in too.

You can use some debit cards if they are not simply cash cards, but rather cards that can be used to pay for transactions. That's what was used. It's easy to get stuff stolen in Itaewon.

OP, I hope you had fun in Itaewon. There may be a high chance, the police won't do much. That's okay. You had a good night, you are safe, you are doing okay. Of course, I wish the person would get caught, but I am glad you are safe.

that actually happened to my coworker
since one of the posters lost the ARC, the embassy is going to want you to file a police report. though nothing will probably be done about it, take a korean coworker/director with you to help with the specifics.

making a new ARC is going to cost 10,000 won. the banks should be accommodating? my coworker had the korean debit taken care of without a hitch. the only thing was he had to wait for the ARC to get a new debit card...

and koreans do not check for signatures.. my coworkers always give me their cc if they don't have cash to buy coffee..
so i'll sometimes buy with 2 different cards, but it's not a problem here -.-

You would be fine after you cancelled your card. I had this happen to me once and I called my credit card company and they faxed me copies of the slip with the "signature" and I sent a scan of my passport/driver's license signatures and they gave cancelled the charge and in turn made the companies pay for allowing the credit card to go through without checking the signature. Took a few months but I didn't have to pay.

That's too bad. Where did it happen? One should assume as a matter of course there will be kleptos working all of Itaewon on busy nights.

One time at a massage parlor, somone stole my debit card. Fortunately, it was the old Woori Bank cards that only worked at a few places like E-mart and Lotte Mart, and at that time you had to use a pin number. Now I have a new one that can be used anywhere without the pin number. That's fine as that was my one and only trip to the anma.
