|

Had a complaint from a recruiter today about "F-2's trying to raise pay rates too high." He said that just before he offered me a PT teaching job at a company for 35,000 won/hr. He then went on and on about how the economy is so bad and companies have cut budgets for English.
That's where I reminded him that the won doesn't go so far for us these days, and things are a lot more expensive.
Gotta love their crying stories. |

tell him he's full of it, I know of companies allotting 60 million/year for their language departments.
and yes they may be looking for ways to cut that but tell them to cut their drinking tabs/dinner tabs first. |

Tell him to take a hike.
35.000 per hour is not much. |

I've heard that recruiters pocket at least half of the hourly rate that the company pays. They're angry at losing their money for nothing--which is what it is after the first month or so! Imagine working at a company, 1.5 hours a time, two mornings a week, for a year, and the recruiter getting ~50,000 won for each lesson. That's five million per year for squat.
What I would do is take the cheap job, then liaise with the actual company and cut out the recruiter.
That is, if I could get out of bed that early. |

I fully agree with him. In these tough economic times sacrifices have to be made. Efficiencies need to be acheived. Let's look at the supply chain and how we can simplify it to create a better business model:
Currently Company > Recruiter > Teacher
The newer better model:
Company > Teacher
If recruiters don't cut their costs and pay F2's more, we do have a choice and it won't be good for them. |

I would agree with this ( for most Asian countries) except Korea.
In most countries, when I get a teaching visa, I can teach in school and also do privates.
Since, I'm married to a Thai woman, I can go to Thailand on a marriage visa or a teaching visa. Both visa's allow me to teach in a school and also do private lessons.
The current gov't is looking for ways to lower education cost. Koreans always go for the easy way.
They might allow E2's the right to teach privates. That would lower the costs by simply increasing the number of available teachers.
I remember ( sorry no link) reading that the gov't was going to allow hagwons to send their teachers to off-site locations. Many Korean companies want to hire a teacher part-time, but realize the currents laws make it very difficult. Most hagwons would love to be able to out source their E2's. Very easy money for them. |

by "too high" how much are they talking about ? 50k an hour?
yeah, 35k an hour is ridiculous and whilst inflation has increased teaching salaries have stayed stagnant for years in ESL here. |

There is a slight flaw in your argument. I have no problem legalising E2's to teach privates but the rate paid by the recruiter will drop, not the rate the company pays for English lessons. You will have E2's doing courses and writing the curriculum for w35,000 per hour or less but the companies will still be paying the recruiter w90,000 - w120,000 per hour.
Recruiters need to keep less of the money if they are to survive, end of story.

Would love to know which recruiter it is and if it is the recruiter I suspect it is. |
