Hi all,
Recently I reinstalled my harddrive and wanted to put Kazaalite back into operation, only to find that it's unavailable now.
I want something with no 'spyware', but all the stuff I look at at Downloads.com- when I read the reviews, seems to have stuff embedded, even when it claims to be free of.
It's funny thinking about the thread here a while back about how, "I love Kazaa," but all the reviews of Kazaa on Downloads.com are very negative now.
Any suggestions? Confused

Thanks.

Another group has taken over Kazaalite and it's called Resurected Kazaalite and still is the same, without the spyware and so on.

http://myimages.fourvalve.com/darthvikram/downloads.htm

There are however still sites with Kazaalite still available (versions prior to the discontinued sources). Get the "original" here

http://bakshi.us/downloads/pafiledb.php?action=license&id=1&file=%2061

Or if you want a new program with the same functionality, get e-Donkey or e-Mule .... easily found via Yahoo search

Bit torrent is simply the best. If you've never used it, I would strongly suggest trying it. It's not like Kazaa, really, in that you aren't connected to a network of users at all times. Insetad, you go to a website hosting .torrent files and download said torrents and the program connects you to different people who are sharing whatever you're looking for. I use the torrent application 'ABC,' which stands for 'Another Bittorrent Client.' I'm not sure where you can download it, but just search for it.

www.suprnova.org is the best site I've seen as far as torrent files goes, although if anyone would like to correct me, feel free to do so. I know some people complained that it was too hard to find anything on the site, but you'll notice in the upper link bar in the center there is a search function. The only problem with it is that you have to turn off your firewalls, leaving you susceptible to evil hacker attacks. I can count on 0 hands the number of evil hacker attacks I've had, if that makes it less scary.

In addition, apparently, if you're big into IRC there are numerous release groups torrenting pretty much anything, from the world curling championships to my mother knitting me a sweater.

I have another post in the thread about the movie Lost in Translation this lists the sites where you can download ABC and the torrent sites including Suprnova ....

And you DO NOT need to turn off your firewalls to use bittorrent. You can however, as many suggest open a few limited ports, which should in all practical sense NOT put you at risk of anything fishy ... and even then it's NOT necessary entirely depending on your computer configuration, whether you have a router, etc.

I've gotten nearly 10 PM's asking questions about what overnet is ...

Well some here talk about Overnet as if it were a totally different thing they what others, including myself, have mentioned.

Overnet is basically a network, a protocol as it were, that is a sharing method for everything, anything that can be on a computer that is.

Overnet IS the e-donkey network; e-donkey is the original method on the network. It is not a different location. e-mule and e-donkey, including other programs are only that, the PROGRAM that allows you to search the overnet network of users.

So when I say, or someone else says that e-donkey or e-mule are an option to Kazaa ... and then someone else says NO NO, it's crap and slow and you should use Overnet .... well they don't know what they are talking about ... it's the SAME thing ...

So pick what application you like, but again, Kazaa is still available if wanted

Though I still endorse BitTorrent .... but what is available is very different on the whole from what you'll get on the other P2P methods

i just tried overnet (edonkey).. i ran some d/ls for 2 days.. it is crap

the best is by far winmx

winmx allows you to do everything you want. in regards to options, winmx allows you to treat d/ls seperately when allocating bandwidth or connections. it hads a great variety of stuff.. problem it does have is that it doesn't offer a option to share software.. rename the stuff to an .avi or .mp3 and it can be shared and also searched and d/led in the same format and renamed back into it's .exe or.zip or whatever.

winmx is so superior to these other p2p progs when it comes to configurations it is not funny... plus there are tons of aftermarket programs that work together with winmx to help you decide which transfers start when and not allowing transfers to leeches..

only real downside is you might have to wait a little for the transfers.. it can't be too bad, in 5 months i have saved 220gb, thats not mentioning the probable 200-300gb i have burnt or deleted. the trick is to share everything, then trade with others to get your d/l started straight away. i share about 200gb and if i want something somebody else has, i message them and they usually find something i have to arrange a trade..

you would be crazy if this is a serious past time and you don't try and learn about the functions of winmx. craps all over on kaaza too.

and with a program like virtualdub you can almost instantly tell whether the file is what you 'think' you are getting.

i just spent 2 days raping bittorrent too.. too much hassle, i got a few things but life is much easier on winmx...

of course it is an idea to try all avenues to find the file you are looking for but i suggest you sit with winmx as your base p2p prog.

Ask Jeeves: Which peer-to-peer file sharing program is the best?
Quote:
General information
Everything is available on the internet: movies, music videos, music, games, books on doing just about anything, pictures.. and everything else that can be digitalized. But this is now a part of the web, you need special software to leech this.

There are three sorts of clients (programs) for downloading multimedia from the net using peer2peer software.

Those who connect to one large server (WinMx, Kazaa)
Those who connect to one or more small servers (Direct Connect)
Those who only connect to other clients, and do not use any servers (Gnutella, Overnet).
The best software for downloading from the peer2peer undernet is currently Direct Connect, but there are other very good alternatives.
Please share all your relevant files, the whole peer2peer requires everybody to share as much as possible in order to work.

Remember that it is unwise to download program files, they may contain trojans or viruses. Please check executables with a virusscanner before using them. Linux users: never download software through p2p (at least check md5sum).

BitTorrent: The best way to get tv-series
bittorrent is a different p2p tool. To use it you need to obtain a special information file, a filedescription.torrent, for the file you want to download. This file is loaded by bittorrent, which instantly finds other people transfering your desired file. As you start to download, you also begin to share and upload.

What is bittorrent good for?

bittorrent is the ultimate tool for hot 0-7 day warez, movies and specially tv-series.

bittorrent only gives you a good download speed while other people are downloading (and thereby uploading to you) the same file. (So please keep bittorrent running 24 hours after you finish your download...)

This means that old episodes of tv-series and movies are hopeless to download with bittorrent, while really hot files are easy to grab. epguides is a good place to find tv-shows release dates.

Clients are available for:

Linux
Mac OS X
Windows
Check our seperate page on BitTorrent for more information

Direct Connect: The best p2p program
Direct Connect is a server/client system, and there are several thousands of servers. The servers do not communicate, so you can only search and download from users on the hub(s) you are connected to. There is software that search all the hubs available.

Clients:

DCGui is the best software available: Connects to several hubs and has multihub-search. Read the dcgui-qt Manual for usage information.
Mldonkey can connect to multiple networks: EDonkey, Direct Connect and Gnutella.
DCTC stands for Direct Connect Text Client.
Windows-only:

Neo-Modus Direct Connect is the original client from Neo-Modus
Good Looking Search searches all the hubs at once
DC++ can connect to several hubs.
The very best HUBs require that you share a minimum of 100+ GB, but most hubs are satisfied with 2-5 GB shared.
Use those HUBs that are closest to you, longer distance means slower downloads.

Good:

Just about everything is available.
It just keeps on growing.
Nice list of available users, their connection and shared files.
Ability to browse users files from search window, easy to download whole directories.
Bad:

You need to share a minimum of your own files
You must let others download from you by keeping a minimum of slots open
ftp
ftp will forever be the most popular peer to peer protocol.

Good ftp servers require a username and password, so you will need to know the person(s) running the ftp service...

giFT
"giFT is a modular daemon capable of abstracting the communication between the end user and specific filesharing protocols (peer-to-peer or otherwise). The giFT project differs from many other similar projects in that it is a distribution of a standalone platform-independent daemon, a library for client/frontend development, and our own homegrown network, OpenFT."

giFT can be run as a daemon on one box and be controlled by any other given box. But a giFT instance can only be controlled by one box at the time, it sux bigtime that it can't be shared.

giFT can, apparently, be used with Windows (giFT/OpenFT's Installation Guide for Windows).

The best thing: Most of the audio are .ogg! This is unique to giFT.

giFT supports fasttrack, openft and gnutella. openft is probably the one you will get most out of.

content plugins

Gnutella
This is and old and always popular p2p protocol.

Gnutella has no servers. Klients talk to other clients and share their peer knowledge.
Clients are usually capable to reach 1k-10k other clients depending on how many open connections you choose. 5 open connections will let you search 1k other clients.
Clients

http://www.gnutella.com/ is a very good place to find clients for all platforms, there are very many available.
QTella is a very good client for Linux and Windows.
http://mutella.sourceforge.net/ is a good and beautifull Linux client.
These days it is common for p2p programs to have a plugin for gnutella.

gift-gnutella
IRC
Internet Relay Chat is the worlds largest chat system, and has hundreds of chat rooms on many different servernetworks.

Some of these rooms are used to share media.

To get started, you need a irc client: Read irc clients .

Music:

#mp3norge on EF-Net
Musicvideo:
#mpglovers on Undernet
Games:
#isoz on EF-Net
Futurama:
#futuramaVCD on EF-Net
Movies:
#filmer on EF-Net
The various channels has their own methods for asking for files. Quite often they have dedicated bots controlled by commands like '/msg brukernavn xdcc list' , !ftp and !list.
Serverlist EF-Net:

http://www.efnet.org/
Serverlist Undernet:

http://www.undernet.org/
Good:

Experienced users can get everything on IRC.
Bad:

You need to be somewhat l33t to get anything downloaded from irc.
You also probably need to know a bit or two about ftp
No searching, no way of searching the entire irc for a keyword
Bandwith may be limited, transferrate will (probably) be somewhat low - meaning you should have a 24/7 irc box
Kazaa
Kazaa Media Desktop is a closed-source windows-only client/server system. The original client is a threat to your already insecure windows computer, use KaZaA Lite instead. Do not underestemate the security issues with spyware programs like Kazaa.

There is a Linux client for Kazaa. It is still in alpha development, but it is usable. Read

KaZaa client for GNU/Linux for more information.

Good:

User-friendly
Bad:

Kazaas client is full of spyware.
The searched are filtered, and they sell good search results.
WinMX
WinMx is a closed-source windows-only client/server system.

Good:

Very user-friendly
It has the perfect interface: Only buttons with explaining text on them.
Bad:

The default search filter is .mp3, therefore .ogg files are not showed by default.

I found Overnet to be great for small downloads such as Palm aps and mp3s but generally terrible for large downloads.
