do any other brits have experience trying to find jobs in seoul? i'm finding it pretty hard. i've been offered jobs at some of those split-shift places, but nothing really worth taking.
many people have told me there's this anti-british bias in seoul, can anyone shed any light on this, ie. is there a way around it, or are there any jobs out there for me at the moment?
any help would be greatly appreciated! |

Koreans want to learn American-English, not British-English. Your grammar skills are not questioned, but yor pronunciation is not what is desired. |

Well Bobby this question comes up quite often....you will run into some employers who believe that their students wont understand you...but slowly they are waking up to the fact that there is little difference beween the two and a few I spoke to realise that GENUINE ENGLISH(not British English!) is the superior accent to learn.
Korea is the only country where there is a bias for North American English in place...the language schools in England are packed with Japanese who are "in the know".
Tests have shown that ANYBODY regardless of race is treated with more distinction in the United States if they have an RP English accent.
Silly little colonials! |

I'm currently doing a job hunt. I found that in general places are lot more interested in me if I 'forget' to mention that I'm a kiwi and apply as a Canadian. I guess I'm lucky that I have 2 passports and thus can get away with it.

Actually, Taiwan tends to do this too.

Yeah, I noticed that the a lot of Japanese like to go to England to study English.
One High School I applied for only hired English teachers through the British Embassy.
Try British Council - pretty gravy job from what I have seen in their adverts. Need a CELTA though, I think. |
