Hey gang. I'm going to start teaching English in Daejeon in August, and was wondering if anyone else is teaching in Daejeon right now. I've done preliminary research about the city itself and have come to the conclusion that I'll love it there. But as always, I look to the internet and to strangers (and to Dave's) for the best information I know I'll find. I have a few questions, such as:

- What's the foreign (not necessarily foreign teacher) population like?
- How is the nightlife? I am still young and do enjoy the occasional bar or nightclub.
- Are there good theaters (movies & shows)? Generally a question about the cultural involvement, how invested people are, the quality of venues, etc.
- Besides all the surrounding mountains to visit, what other less-popular, natural attractions exist nearby, or within?
- What is the apartment market like? Friendly to foreigners? Or will I be staying in an Officetel or dorm-style place with other teachers?
- I've read the public transportation is extensive and efficient. How easy is it to get around by bike? AND might it be cost-effective to buy a car? A Daewoo, perhaps?

And any other advice that is valuable in regards to teaching English in Daejeon is more than welcome. I am more than a bit nervous about moving there, but am keeping an open-mind about most everything.

I'm looking forward to the MudFest next year! I know Daejeon is near where it happens. If anyone is going to it in 2010, let me know, I'll go with you.

Hi There,

Daejeon has more varied people here all the time. Because of KAIST professionals and students come reasonably often, however meeting them regularly depends on the area you live in.

There are a few spots in town that have plenty of places to go out for a good time. The city is spread out though.

There are a few movie theatres at the department stores. Usually a couple of current hollywood blockbusters and Korean movies.

There is a culture and art hall but they only get noteworthy people in from overseas really rarely. There is a lot of classical and orchestral there.

Seoul is the place to go and also the universities are more likely to get in Korean bands from time to time. One band plays around town on weeknight evenings.

I think Kyeryungsan is for the most part quiet and it is huge in area. The temple areas get some people going. I have yet to explore properly. There are other areas around but remember weekend hiking is very popular with Koreans. It can be worth taking trips outside the city to see temples.

By no means do you have to accept sharing accommodation with anyone. It should be provided, or is this not part of your contract?

If it is not provided you could be looking at a hefty price tag and $300 a month. It's not the monthly rent but the deposit that can be problematic.

You may have to go for other kinds of accommodation near the university or something if this is the case..

There is plenty of public transport and taxis are cheap. By no means is it cost effective to get a car. You may find the car keeps you stuck in traffic. However in Daejeon it is easy to take trips out of the city and explore if you have one. You would need to change your license for an international one then get a Korean one. it is not too difficult or expensive, however some people have found accidents are difficult to deal with here and all the road stuff is in Korean.Place names are in english lettering too though.
