with the current cyber crime chaos going on, my wife (korean) instructed me to not use the PC yesterday in case we got a virus. Now, i thought it absolutley inconceivable that we would have A) been the target of a cyber attack and B) get qa virus anyway (we use firefox, don't open any strange emails, have good anitvirus software (avast)
to humor her i used an old notebook we had lying around and used that last night.
plug the newer notebook in this morning (the attack was supposed to happen before 12am this morning
switch it on and i can't believe it - we got the virus. avast took care of it instantly (it was an .msi file in the system32 folder)
how did these attackers do this? they must have had the virus contained in certain korean internet sites. My wife only uses IE for certain banking or cyworld type websites that dont work well in FF), and we haven't downloaded anything from an email or otherwise in some time. as far as i know this is the first time my pc has been attacked in this way....
i'm very computer literate (used to be a tech) but this one has me confused, particularly seeing as i was laughing at the probabilty of an attack just last night - i'm eating my words now...)
just wondered if this happened to anyone else? |

Possibly a windows vulnerability. If you're connected and there is a windows vulnerability the virus might have gotten in that way. That is actually the way a virus spreads. If it requires interaction on the users part, running a file, etc, it isn't really a virus.
The hallmarks of a virus are usually that it spreads by itself. Stuff that requires you click attachments, etc are trojans/malware/etc as the case may be. |

You can bet 90% of those hacked were using Internet Exploder. |

the anti-viruses (vaccines) are here - http://global.ahnlab.com/
I don't need it - because my system is Windows 7 Beta 64bit (build 7100)
and it is only attacking computers running on Vista, XP, 98, 95 ME etc |

firefox and avast solved the problem for me, i just haven't seen a virus transfer with such ease before, particularly as this notebook was NOT physically connected to the internet for about 24 hours. |
