I just got a cheap flight to Taiwan for about 10 days at the end of August. I've got a Lonely Planet and I'm doing some more research on the net, but I thought I'd ask any of you that have been for some suggestions.
I don't go to bars and I've seen enough markets to last me a lifetime. I'm more interested in outdoor stuff - hiking, scuba diving, any cool islands/beaches you went to. Any other tips you've got are appreciated.

Thanks a lot

Me and my girlfriend went to taiwan for a long weekend a couple of weeks ago. We hired a scooter from an English guy called Jeremy at http://www.bikefarm.net/. Its a bit nervewracking at first but once you get used to the traffic it was great fun and a good way to get around. We spent one day touring around the North coast, a few places worth a look are Yehliu (sp?) Geopark, the lighthouse right at the northern tip of Taiwan and Danshui, which you can reach by MRT from Taipei if you dont have your own wheels.
Apart from that day, we stayed in Taipei, there were some interesting buildings, we visited a few and went up Taipei 101 too, I would reccomend that.

Have a good time!

I'm going for a week at the end of July and I'm wondering the same thing, but I already have planned a short trip out of Taipei to visit Taroko Gorge. I'll be staying in Hualien for 2 nights. Is there anything else to do around there? Is it worth spending 2 days at Taroko Gorge?

I don't think I'll be able to make it down to Kenting, but it sounds nice.

I'm interested in anything in Taipei or a short trip (ideally a day-trip kind of thing) away.

Planning to check out the Taipei 101, some of the markets, and the trip to Taroko. Other than that, I'm open to suggestions.

Go the the National Palace Museum if possible. Amazing stuff.

Other than that, you'll find all kinds of things to do, depending on your interests.

These helped me when I went. Good luck!

How is the shopping in Taiwan? Cheaper than Korea?

I'm mainly interested in electronics, as I am thinking about buying a camera before I go at the end of the month, but I may just get one there if I can save some money.

Oo islands.. 1. Don't go to Matsu.. unless you want to learn about military history, get a GOOOD workout from the hills, want to island hop around there, see the Chinese battleships in the distance, go bird watching, or just go to a place where most of the people have fled the island XD

2. Penghu, Green Island, or many of Taiwan's other islands are good..

3. There were some nice mountains I hiked in Yilan, but everything required driving to.. you'd have to drive up it some to get to the trails lol.. big big mountains..

I used to live there, love it.

Where you go depends on what you like to do.

If you want nightlife, Taipei, Kaohsiung and Tainan are the best in that order. Same applies for shopping. If you wanna do some sightseeing Tainan, Taipei Kaohsiung are great cities but there are better places like Lugang (small town), haulien and even the east coast near Taitung (lots of natural beauty and also aboriginal culture) are all spectacular, sun moon lake is way overrated in my opinion. Beaches? Kenting (baisha) luichu and off the beaten track places on the east coast are all fine. Climbing or hiking? Alishan and Yushan are great and much better than anything Korea has to offer by far.

Any other questions don't hesitate.

Cheers
