I've never seen the show, but apparently it's Korea's answer to Myth Busters.
A few of my previous students told me that they had an episode on Fan Death last week. I've had a few conversations with my students on this topic, so they all thought of me when they were watching this.
They told me that the show ripped the myth apart and totally debunked it.
Anyone happen to catch it? |

Su pon gee is a great show. The best one was waegook breath vs Korean breath.
Koreans are disgusted by garlic and kimchi like we are. We on the other hand are not disgusted by cheese or milk breath. |

I've read a couple of posts about this fan death thing but it's just a big joke, right?
I mean someone heard that a Korean believes that fans are harmful because they blow dirty air and it's unhealthy or some thinking along those lines.
Don't tell me that some Koreans actually believe a fan can kill you. |

I've talked to about 4 or 5 different Korean women and they all tell me that I'll die if I leave my fan on all night while I sleep. |

A few years ago I left a request on the Mythbusters idea board to do an episode about fan death.
So far, I've only seen them do one on the 'shingijeon' war machine thingy, which albeit was cool. But a fan death show would be more useful in dispelling Korea's lunacies. |

My mother and girlfriend really believe it. The newspapers have articles about it. My mother shows me these articles as proof that I can die if I leave the fan on. |

As near as I have been able to deduce, the legend of Fan Death goes back to the Park Chung-hee administration (basically a military dictatorship) of the 60's and 70's. As Korea's economy was not quite what it is today, the government was continuously searching for ways to save resources. Certain historians and experts believe the Fan Death story was circulated to encourage people to not use their fans at night, in order to aviod excess electricity usage and avoid brownouts. Like any good Urban Legend, Fan Death caught on a spread like wildfire.
Even though it has been scientifically disproved; there are still many believers. I guess it is hard to just stop believing something you have thought to be true for so long. Most of the younger generation does not subscribe to the legend, I have even come across students who had never heard of it. |

This has always bugged me, and sorry to turn a simple topic into a serious one, but damn...just how gullible are Koreans?
Are they actually gullible, or do they just internalize crap like this 1984-style in order to not cause a psychological schizm?
Park Chung Hee tells everyone a fan will kill them, they believe it.
Park Chung Hee tells everyone that marijuana is worse than heroin, they believe it.
Park Chung Hee tells everyone that the alt music scene is filled with commies...screw it, we LOVE ballads now!
My god, that guy did a number on this country. I mean, were they so afraid of him that they basically just made his BS a part of their psychology? |

Some of the older generation seem to love him. They talk about how things things were clean (crime and corruption-wise) back then and things got done, etc. It's ironic (or maybe not so much) that in their mindset, the "good old days" were when they had a totalitarian government and people had no civil liberties.
If you want an answer to how gullible people are, just look at the beef protests. |

Speak for yourself, ish is foul. However, climb into an elevator or a train carriage in the UK and the air isn't befouled with cheese and milk - so how come Koreans produce a miasma of garlic wherever they congregate in groups of more than none? |

You forgot a couple things that support this guys credibility.
Park Chung Hee pulls off a Coup d'tat
Park Chung Hee persuades the U.S. to stay out of the fiasco
Park Chung Hee creates the KCIA (a nice police group to protect the state)

Park Chung Hee tells everyone a fan will kill them ...

Park Chung Hee tells everyone that the alt music scene is filled with commies...screw it, we LOVE ballads now! [thats probably just unified bad taste] |
Park Chung Hee points at the KCIA agents
-Everyone nods
I think many people dont realise just how authoritarian Korea was until the 1990's.

I read somewhere that the legend of fan death comes from the times when Koreans heated their homes with coal-powered ondol. They couldn't leave all of the windows closed because the carbon monoxide really would kill you.
Then, it just transferred to any climate-altering device. |
