This banner has gone up in Suncheon over the last couple days. Maybe your town is next?

Who is leading this "crackdown" and why doesn't the Korean government ever crackdown on hagwons that break the law?

Probably. Kind of saw this coming with the economy tanking. If you don't think immigration is going to get aggressive, then you were probably not here in 1997.

This still appears to be the hagwon association, but immigration will soon follow. JMO.

Good. The more illegals that get deported the more this industry gets cleaned up. It's long been in need of a drastic overhaul. Next step is punishinghakwon owners that don't obey the laws.

One would think that should be the first step.

Or how about fining parents who illegally employ foreign tutors for their children?

It`s easier to target us than pick on their own Koreans.

No idea. There are three phone numbers at the bottom: Yeosu immigration, Suncheon Office of Education, and Suncheon Association of Hakwon.

How about a non-archaic visa system that allows those who are qualified to control their work situations..... Rolling Eyes

Whoever they are, they are in desperate need of English lessons themselves. Maybe I'll offer them my special rate.

Perhaps the hagwons contribute to the economy.

What about public schools. Not everyone is honest there either.

I found a great article: http://metropolitician.blogs.com/scribblings_of_the_metrop/2008/09/indentured-serv.html.

That is easily one of the stupidest things (the article) that I have ever read on Dave's (and that's saying something). Indentured servant my foot. You are only an indentured servant if you let them treat you as such. And what about F-2's or other F-type people? The E-2 is a work visa where you work for a certain employer...much the same as in other countries. Yes if you work illegally you can be deported, again much the same as in other countries. And he's not even an E-2. What does he know about it? Sounds like he's jealous of E-2 holders and trying to frighten them away from Korea.

He did make a couple of points...but they were lost under the weight of the sweeping assumptions and general B.S. of his article.

What's next...is he going to compare us to African-American slaves in the 18th century? Rolling Eyes

As for your question...Public schools are more accountable for their dealings. You can go up the chain of command to the school board or the co-ordinator or the supervisor...

And I've rarely heard of people complaining that they weren't paid in P.S. It's more about big class sizes, stupid co-teachers, lack of heating/AC and so on.

Yes perhaps some of them pay tax. Not many however.
