So Google's developing an operating system based on the linux kernel.

I was wondering what people thoughts are on this. Should Microsoft be worried? Personally, I think a lot will depend on how well Windows 7 runs on netbooks and the next generation ultraportable devices.
In the end, I think competition can never hurt. In S. Korea, we're witnessing the stagnation that occurs when one technology (activex) dominates an entire market. |

I think Microsoft doesn't have anything to worry about until manufacturers start loading the new Google OS instead of Windows 7. The fact is that most computer users don't know that they have options other than IE. I expect the same will remain true unless Google can force regular users to see that they have an option.
Google is smart though and they have a great track record. |

Netbooks are VERY weak under the hood. I wish there was an OS for netbooks that was less than 1GB installed that used very low system resources.
Yes yes, there is Linux, however, IE doesn't work on Linux. At least, I sure as well can't get IE to work on Ubuntu. I've tried Wine, and all other sorts of methods. It won't run.
Without IE, I can't access online banking, or make any purchases with my Netbook. As well as browse other Korean web pages correctly.
If Google Chrome OS was very lightweight and also allowed me to run ActiveX to view Korean websites, I'd think it would be a homerun. |

The Korean market isn't exactly the hub of the universe though. Online banking (my home bank) works well for me in Google chrome.
I doubt that Google is going to be selling this system though. For free it's hard to complain. It seems like the computer will just boot within seconds and go straight to the Internet. Since I did 90% of my stuff on the web with my little handheld PC, this seems like a good option. |

The os will be linux-based so it'll have to be free and open-sourced. It looks like we're moving towards an era where hardware is cheap, operating systems are free, and the brunt of processing power and storage is offloaded to remote servers.
If Google had released this thing a year ago, I think Microsoft would've been in trouble. As it is, by the time the os is released, Windows 7 will've gained a lot of traction.
Still, Google has the name recognition and the resources to pull this off. They have a knack for redefining technology through simple, well-designed user-interfaces. The knock on linux has always been how difficult it is to setup and maintain. Perhaps, Google can finally iron out the kinks and build the ultimate killer linux distribution. |

While I think a Google OS could be cool, I think Mac OS X is already doing alot of the things they claim they want to accomplish with their OS. Such as greater ease and reliability, and as well increased security. And Mac OS X is also based on a Unix-like build. And the ipod Touch and iphone already show that a stripped down version of Mac OS X can work just fine on low power computing machines.
It is interesting to see Google and Apple release similar products but through different markets. Nice link Cresent. |

OSX is solid, but it's only officially supported on mac hardware. Apple is entitled to limit their support to their own hardware -- their sales are, afterall, primarily driven by hardware -- however, an os that's tied to one hardware vendor doesn't fit my view of an ideal os.
I'd love to see what would happen if Apple officially opened up OSX to the pc market. |

| I wonder about spyware and other privacy issues. Not to mention that if the internet goes down, your cloud computing goes into the toilet. |

You can still save your most important files locally. The google version is called 'Google Gears'. It saves whatever you "star" to your hd. It works for emails too. |
