This Hello business, I find some of the kids say hello to me rather too loudly, I dont know if they are being rude. I also dont feel like I command the same respect as some of the other teachers, is this because I let the students call me by my first name? I engage the students in conversation if they dont scream hello at me, but is this a case of familiarity breeding contempt?
I dont know if I should press the issue home with english teachers and subsequently home room teachers either........
The job has been getting me down the last couple of days. There have been some other personal issues going on which have made me pretty worn out I have to admit, but any advice is much appreciated!!
Is it too late to get the kids now to start addressing by the title teacher.......... |

The problem starts with the clueless principal introducing you to the school as Firstname-선생님 thinking that he's treating you very respectfully. I've seen foreigners called Professor Firstname, Professor Mr Firstname, etc. They just don't know.
As for the loud Hello, I've got it from students who are both very polite and somewhat rude. It's mostly just teenage drivel and not worth getting worked up about. If you understand some Korean it's pretty obvious whether they're talking to you respectfully or not (because of levels of honorifics in the Korean language), and that's the only litmus test that's accurate. |
