|
|
I remember years ago, while travelling on the train, spying a cool wee island on the Han river somewhere between Seoul and Yangpyeong. It was pretty small, with just some grass and trees on it, but I thought it would be a cool place to padde out to and camp out overnight.
Has anyone here ever been exploring along the Han river outside of Seoul? Has anyone been camping or picnicing near Paldang lake or around Yangsuri? |

Down near its source in Chungju, Chungchonbukdo, there is a big lake/dam and some camping spots. |

Just wait for the Seoul-Busan canal to be built Duncan - and you'll be able to do some camping and fishing once it has been built! |

Hi Pie Eater, thanks for bringing that up . Actually the Grand Canal plan has been "abandoned" but controversy is now brewing over the Four Rivers project.
Here's a recent news article about how the promotional videos for the Four Rivers project have been full of distortions.

Here's the translation (please let me know if I've made any glaring mistakes)

On the same day that the Four Rivers Revival Planning Group was officially launched dispute has arisen over the publicity video.
In contrast to the excessive stress placed on the idea that our rivers are dying, an unexpected picture and reality has entered.

Today at the Gwacheon Government Complex the Four Rivers Revival Planning Group unveiled their official plaque and began their project.

This is a 3 minute promotional video prepared by the Four Rivers Revival Planning Group.
It presented the moral obligation to revive and develop the four great rivers because our country's rivers are dying.
Then, while saying fish don't live in our rivers the video showed a scene with dead salmon.
However, the scene in question was not from one of our rivers.
I asked the reason for using foreign scenes

It's also claimed in the promotional video that the 4 rivers have no wetlands.
But including the Upo Wetlands there are 11 RAMSAR registered wetlands [Duncan's note: I don't know how many of these are within the area to be affected by the four rivers project] and there is a division that has jurisdiction over wetlands within the MLTMA.

Kim Hee Kuk, Four River Revival Planning Group Head
(Interviewer's question): Is it true the MLTMA has jurisdiction over coastal wetlands?
Coastal wetlands? Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, MOMAF, MOMAF
The promotional video also claimed no migratory birds can be found in our rivers and portrayed the rivers as being dead.
However, every year 500,000 migratory birds come to our rivers.

The MLTMA said it will correct its erroneous expressions and has erased the problem video from its blog.

Swimming? I won't swim in public pools in Korea, much less the freaking Han river.
Camping? Maybe during DJ festival or passing out drunk, but planning a "relaxing" weekend on the Han? Impossible. |

If you are looking for camping and swimming one weekend, how about Jawoldo, one of Incheon's islands.
You can pitch your tent for free on the beach on Jawoldo. To get there, you can take a ferry from the Incheon domestic ferry terminal. I think the one to Jawoldo leaves at 9am. I haven't been there yet, but it's on my to do list for this summer.
I heard from Jawoldo, you can take a day trip to a place called Moraetop, which is this beach island thing in sea. There are no trees or any vegetation on the island, just sand.
Don't forget to bring bottles of water (I heard on some islands it is harder to come by), and bug reppellent.
The 1330 tourism hotline can give you better information than me. |
