hello all
Am new to all of this, as far as I know, the recruiter finds schools/hagwons for you and you should do your own research on the school then?

Can anyone give me some tips/criteria for choosing a hagwon?
Stuff like speaking with the current teachers there etc.

Big hagwons are generally better, but not always. They just usually have some sort of conformity to a set of rules/standards...kind of. Search the web. Websites are usually a good sign. As well, put your offers on esl cafe for an evaluation.

-Ask about sick days
-vacation
-hours (max for a day/week/month) and what time
-housing

I would recommend working in a big hogwon with lots of foreign teachers. This would make your adjustment to Korea much easier. They'll give you advice and take you out on the town (they should do if they're half decent).

The average hogwon has about 4 or 5 foreign teachers. That's quite acceptable. That should be your basic requirement. There are bigger ones with between 10 to 15. Those schools would be much more western in the way they deal with you, and lots of problems would already be ironed out by the previous teachers.

But if there's only 1 or 2 foreingers then i'd reconsider, that might be hard for your first time in Korea. [It's fine if you've experience].

Why don't you use the same criteria Hakwons use for picking teachers.

1) Is the boss goodlooking?
2) Does he'she look like they'd be a good clown.
And most important...
3) Does your boss have a pulse.
