Once a week or so a salesperson will come into the main teacher's office selling socks, jewelry, and other junk.

No one ever buys anything and they always seem uncomfortable when the salesperson persists in the pitch.

Is this common? Why does my VP allow this?

Yes people come into my (pubic) school all the time, but nobody is ever uncomfortable about it. Personally I don't mind it either; it's in the teachers' office so it's not a distraction for the students, and it's not in the way of anything. Sometimes teachers buy stuff from the people.

The guy is currently pitching the VP who is doing his best to look busy. Why not just tell him off? It's your school, man.

I think it's a 'face' thing. Everyone in the teachers' office knows the guy selling socks is down on their luck. So they tolerate it (group harmony) and sometimes buy stuff they don't need. It's the same on the bus - people hawking all sorts of nonsense. But, ....... people still buy it (sympathy???).

I get this all the time.

The only salesperson that actually sells anything is the lady dressed in brown selling milk, yogurt banana drink, and strawberry milk.

The rest are annoyances.

Some of these guys dress really well and look like Supervisors from the Board of education. So much so that some teachers particularly newbies will jump up like a Jack in the Box

No one wants to scale the stairs to the 5th floor. I'm safe.

It is odd, though. We have a gate and a security guard and I always thought 'how did you get past security?'

One big, fat douchebag came to our staff room in the middle of a meeting, knocked on the door, and then entered, announced himself, and started giving a sales speech. After beeing told twice to go away because we were having a meeting he waited outside for about 20 minutes before finally giving up. I don't see why they can't just put up a 'no soliciting' sign and tell them to fornicate off.
