I'm making my first trek out of Seoul this month and need to gear up. A friend of mine just bought a backpack from Lafuma - I'm willing to do that as it wasn't crazy expensive and seemed to be of reasonable quality...but as always, if I can save some won, I'd like to.

Any and all ideas are welcome! Thanks for your help!

I bought a cheap one in Namdaemun a month ago for about 40,000 won. It's not going to last a lifetime, but it's great for just basic travel through Asia. I think the brand was called Downtown.

If you go, make sure you shop around, compare prices and definitely negotiate.

What style are you looking for? The normal backpack you'd use to carry books to and from class at a university, or one of those tall ones with the frame for carrying like 150 pounds around?

I got a nice "normal" one from World Cup two years ago. It was about 40,000 won.

But I should have checked this site's 'buy and sell' forum first.

There are a bunch of hiking shops around Namdaemun that have good quality bags at reasonable prices, but nothing like 40,000.

You might be able to get by with a cheap bag, but I don't think it's a bad idea to spend a little more on something that you will be lugging your life around in for a few months at a time. Don't want a strap to break when you're in the middle of Laos or something.

The North Face makes some nice mid-size packs that are perfect for travel.. A little more expensive but then you don't have to worry about them falling apart on you ...

North face is good quality. Black Yak is also a famous hiking/backpack store from Korea. The quality is also quite good, and you will pay less than northface. Black Yak sells some nice backpacks. There are many locations around Seoul. There is one in Techno mart on the first floor.

I picked up a nice Summit backpack at a hiking store. It has been a god send so far.
