I am hoping to get some advice, suggestions, and tips on what you would do if you had to teach 50 Korean kids, all ranging between the 2nd and 4th grade, for 5 hours on a Saturday afternoon.

This is a one time job, where I am supposed to 'entertain' them, basically, but I would like some games and activities that would help pass the time.

They are being watched by teachers and parents, so there will be break times with meals and snacks. What I am saying is that I do not have to fill the whole slot, because the teachers also have plans, although I am under the impression that the more I have or am prepared the happier everyone will be.

treasure hunt, easter bunny, marching band drills, duck duck goose, water-soaked toilet paper fight, TPR phonics, head shoulders knees and toe, ...
I definitely don't want to be in your shoes but if you get it then surely I'll get it too in the future.

Red Rover is always good.

Capture the Flag...but you'd need help to organize that.

British bulldogs and full tackle American football. Then it will be nap time!

I would make a long list of stuff just in case they start to get bored or they get confused. Like you said, being well prepared will make you happy.

water balloon or egg toss, you know where everyone gets a partner and a breakable....you can easily kill an hour if you make everyone go together and take the same size steps and drag it out.......kids go crazy for it too.

I'm picturing a cool 'Lord of the Flies' activity...

Just let 'em loose and only have enough slices of kimbab for 5 kids. Be sure to leave sharp and pointy objects just laying around nearby....

Alternatively, get 'em all to lie in waiting to ambush the first passing waegook. "Ok kids..yes all 50 of you... get your dongchim fingers ready....here he comes......."

First of all break them up into 2 groups so they are more manageable.

Play Freeze tag.

http://www.ehow.com/how_2058069_play-freeze-tag.html

add this element. You can avoid being frozen if you can yell out a noun (or whatever) just prior to being tagged. If you can't yell out a noun in time you are frozen when touched. You can only be unfrozen if someone yells out an adjective while touching you.

Scavenger hunt.

Prior to the class write down English word/phrases on index cards and tape them in various spots in the area. Put the kids in groups of 4 and give each a list. Find 4 colors, 3 verbs, 1 famous quote, etc.

Pony Express

Working with the kids in groups of 4 - put 1 person from each in a line shoulder to shoulder but spaced apart. Place the 2nd person from each group in another line about 10 yards from them. The third person from each group another 10 yards away. Then the last person.

Using a football field as an example, the 1st kid would be standing on the sideline at the 10 yard line. His team mate would be 10 yards in also standing on the 10 yard line. The other team mates would also be on the 10 yard line.

The next team would be standing on the 15 yard line - spaced out across the field. etc.

Give the first kid in each group a famous passage from some English book or poem. When you say go - the second kid must run to the first kid. The first kid reads a sentence and the second listens then runs to the third kid. He relays the sentence. The third kid then runs to the fourth kid who writes down the sentence. Meanwhile, the second kid is back at the first kid getting the next sentence.

And the other teams are doing the same thing. It gets pretty chaotic and humorous.

Tell the kids that spelling matters (so each team should put their best speller as the 4th person) as well punctuation and capitalization. This is a great before lunch activity. Tell them you will grade the papers during lunch and candy will be awarded to the team with the most correct paper.

Works on reading, listening, spelling, and writing.

I truly appreciate everyone's advice. The organizers informed my wife today that there will be 60+ kids and this will all happen tomorrow....

any more last minute ideas would be beneficial.

Thanks again.

Red light, green light would be a good game. They stand in a line and you say green light and they have to run fast and then when you say red light whoever is still moving is out and whoever can get to the finish line first wins. Its great b/c you can play with many kids.

Dodgeball, although maybe with a soft ball but that game can go on for 2-3 hours and kids love it, I love it. Its also good b/c the kids will be in one central location and not running everywhere.

Frisbee golf.

Teach them how to throw frisbees. Then get some boxes and put them ll around the area you're working in. Then they play golf using the frisbee. You could waste a good 2-3 hours with that one.

It went well today, thank you all for your help.

There was actually 72 kids Rolling Eyes, but I didn't really have to do too much. We played "Monster, how are you? (What time is it Mr. Wolf)", had an egg toss, and then ran around and screamed for a few hours, including a water gun fight, which ended up with everyone being soaked.

It was fun. I'm burned and now I look like Lester the lobster (from P.E.I....if you don't know-the song!).
