I have to teach gym class to kindies once a week in a smallish gymnasium, and I'm running out of ideas. I've played tag, done obstacle courses, relay races, red light/green light...etc. tried soccer once, but the space is a little small.

Has anyone else taught gym class to kindies? Any activities that worked well? Or, just anyone have any ideas for simple 25-minute activities for 18 kids who don't speak English all that well?

Thanks

Balance!

Blindfold one kid and spin them around, then get them to go through a preset windy course.

Freeze tag. To start, I had them play crawling on hands and knees so it was easier to monitor. You can try some other games with the "crawling" variation to help control the chaos.

I'm guessing you've done "Duck, Duck, Goose," but it isn't on your list, so I'll mention it anyway.

A couple of warmer-uppers:

1.
Vocab: Parts of the body, everyday/houshold objects, clothes
Skill: Listening to and following instructions

Get them all stood up and then get them to mime the instructions you shout out. Do a couple and then issue two instructions, then three etc.
    Wash your face
    Brush your hair
    Clean your teeth
    Clean your shoes
    Wash your hair
    Wash your dishes
    Brush your shoes
    Wash your socks
    Clean your glasses
    Wash your hands etc

2.
Vocab: Parts of the body, base verb forms
Skill: Listening to and following instructions

Ask your learners what we can do with our feet/hands. Feet seems to work best but hands (clap, throw, catch, point etc) has some miliage.
    Run
    Stand
    Bounce
    Jump
    Kick
    Walk
    Skip
    Hop
    Climb
    Balance
    Slide
    Skate
    Ski etc

3.
Vocab: Parts of the body, shapes, left & right, sizes
Skill: Listening to and following instructions

Get your learners to follow your instructions:
Make a small triangle with your arms
Make a small circle with your left thumb
Make a big square with your right leg etc

Add music.

My kids beg for Eric Herman's "Bounce and Twist and Flap" and I'm constantly looking for new songs that they can jump up and down to...and I don't dig any complicated choreography...then I would have to learn how to dance...and my school now knows that making me dance is a BIG mistake. We had to do this simple "monkey dance" with the kids and parents on "English Village" day and I fell down hard enough to break an unsuspecting balloon.

hm... i dont know if this will work but ive played this with gr.6's and they absolutely loved it! (well in canada)

the pony game

gather everyone in a circle
you select few ponies that are going to run around the circle during the song

the song:
here we go ride my pony
here we go ride my pony
here we go ride my pony
riding on my pony

at this point, the ponies stop infront of other students
and the continues

front to front to front my baby
*during t hey shake face each other*
back to back to back my baby
*they shake facing backs*
side to side to side my baby
*shake side ways*
riding on my pony
*at this point, the pony and the student exchange place. so the student becomes the new pony*

another, doctor doctor (human tangling)
in a circle they grab each others hands to tangle themselves. one person, aka the doctor will instruct them how to un-tangle

human rock paper scissors
reg rock paper scissors using your whole body

rock: crunched down on the floor
paper: spread out like a star
scissors: karate chopping hands
so students are in a circle facing back to back then you say rock paper scissors reveal! when you say reveal they need to turn around (by jumping) and reveal whether they're rock, paper, or scissors

think of the games you played as a camper...
i don't know how well these games would go with the kindergarteners... but good luck

Walk in and yell "Freeze tag!! Everybody's it!!!"

That usually takes up a good ten or so minutes.

I like some of these ideas, one game my kids like is to play a type of basketball. put the kids in pairs and assign each pair of children a fruit, or number whatever. Now have the kids make 2 lines, and put the basket in the middle. (the 2 lines are compsed of one kid of each fruit ex. one apple in one line the other apple in the second line. Call out a fruit like "Strawberries!" and throw the ball. The 2 students that are strawberries run to the ball, the person to get the ball and put it in the basket or bucket wins a point for their team. You can yell more than one fruit, you can even yell everyone. kids seem to like it and its easy.

i use to set the ball between the 2 lines but the kids have no fear and oftentimes dive face first into eachother so it's better just to throw the ball in a random location

Put flashcards on the wall based on different catagories - Home, Transportation, etc. Call out a card and the student run over to touch them. They'll have a hoot.

Duck, duck, goose.
