In a 470-415 vote on Saturday, Audra Shay won the Young Republican chairmanship. Maybe she's the new young leader the GOP has been waiting for.
"Some highlights:
Shays opponent, Rachel Hoff, was the subject of an ugly sexual innuendo whisper campaign that questioned her reasons for supporting civil unions.
Shays electoral slate, dubbed Team Renewal, battled desperatelysome likened it to intimidationand, ultimately, successfully to block a motion that would have allowed delegates to cast their votes by secret ballot, for fear theyd lose.
Near-fistfights on the floor, and finally something of a boycott, as some of Hoffs slate of candidates lower on the ticket chose to remove their names from the ballot after her defeat."

Meghen McCain is also unimpressed:
"What exactly do the Young Republicans expect to achieve by electing a 38-year-old woman who thinks racial epithets are acceptable?"

I don't know who Michael Rowe is, but he was not happy either:
"When two of her other friends--including Sean L. Conner, chairman of the D.C. Young Republicans--complained about the racist language on Shay's Facebook thread, Shay responded, not by unfriending the author of the "mad coon" comment, but by unfriending the two who complained."

Audra Shay looks like she is shaping up to be a nice partner for Michael Steele, if he'll share his spotlight with her. Like many of you, I am tired of the PC police. I think if Audra Shay herself wants to call Obama a coon in public, it would be fine with me. She can call Sotomayor a wetback greaser, too, if she wants to. On national TV--all the better.
Why should slightly more than half the GOP delegates at this convention--rising leaders of one of our two main parties--censor themselves? Call it 'truth in advertising'. |
