I got an offer in Cheonan, just outside of Seoul. Does anyone know if this is a good area? Is there much fun to be had there?
Thanks! |

I've had some great nights out there, but mostly thanks to friends who are long term there knowing the town well. It's a good position, IMHO, as you can still reach Seoul in a jiffy with the rapid train, but can also get out into the country for a looksee.
Oh yeah, and I was told it is the murder capital of Korea. |

Cheonan is a nice, but small city (pop. 400,000). Very easy to get to travel around the city. Seoul is 30 to 90 mins to from here.
I've been here almost 4 years. When I need a change of location, I will go to Osan. Very large American community at the air base. Very rare for me to travel to Seoul.
If you have any specific questions, then just pm me.

Cheonan is a MINIMUM of 60 minutes from Seoul, unless you live by Asan and can catch the KTX. The rapid trains (subway) are few and far between, about 1 train every 90 minutes. However, Cheonan/Cheonan-Asan, Sinchang all have different national trains which stop there. Depending on your location, you could take the KTX to Seoul in about 30 minutes, or you can catch a Mughungwha/Saemaeul/Nooriro train. They come back about every 20 minutes or so (due to all the lines to Seoul coming through their) and you can make it in about 50-60 minutes (or 90 on the Nooriro). Taking the subway up will take you 90 minutes to make it to line 4, 2 hours to make it to the south edge of Seoul.
That being said, Cheonan itself is decent. Very rural areas are nearby (Cheonan itself isn't exactly a bustling metropolis), easy access to Gyeonggi-do as well as heading south. All in all, a decent place IF you are the kind of person who ACTIVELY searches for things to do. If you think things just happen out of the blue, you'll probably be bored silly. You do have to make SOME effort to find things to do there. |

I used to live in Cheonan. Not a bad town. It's on the Seoul metro line 1 but it is the last stop and takes about 2.5 hours to reach Seoul Station from there. Lots of ammenities for foreigners there. Also nearly every foreign guy I saw walking around was usually holding hands with his Korean GF. That's pretty odd for a town so far outside Seoul. |
