Hi guys,
Had a lovely e-mail this morning (a week after signing a contract with a school in Suwon and sending off all my papers) to say the current teacher has decided to re-sign the contract thus leaving me high and dry, especially seeing as I'm leaving my current job next week!
Anyhoo...she's come back to me with a position in Uijeongbu. I've had a quick look and it looks just north of Seoul...can anyone please shed some light on the area? I was looking forward to living in Suwon due to the expat community, football and transport links - does anyone know what the nightlife etc. is like around here?
Thanks |

Just got a position there myself
Haven't started, but from what I've read it's heavy in american military and beautiful mountainous scenery. Look up the apartments on youtube, you get the whole range of gorgeous and green to sterile and plain. |

uijeongbu isn't as overwhelmed with the military as was mentioned. there are a few bases that are still active, but most of the city is relatively unbothered by them.
if you had your heart on suwon, you may not be too disappointed. suwon is spread out, so it isn't always convenient. you've got most of what you'll need in uijeongbu, and seoul proper is really close. since you were already faced with a commute to seoul from suwon, uijeongbu might be an improvement in that category. |

oh yeah. uijeongbu and beautiful aren't exactly two words i associate with each other. there are some nice mountain views on clear days though. that is, of course, depending on where and how high up your apartment is. |

my friend, i live in uijeongbu. i have a magnificent view and i guarantee that your apartment will, under no circumstances, be as nice as mine. they don't house hagwon or public school teachers in places like where i live. stay optimistic, but don't be surprised if the area where you end up doesn't meet your lofty expectations. i have seen where other foreigners live in this area. |

unless things have changed from when I worked at a hagwon, that is far better than the standard apartment you'll receive, so don't some expecting this or you'll be very disapointed |

Uijonbu is Ok-lots of rural restaurants eg duck and much cleaner and clearer than Suwon. |

Ok thanks for your help - got an interview for 'English Friends' Institute on monday.
The money they're offering is the same so no complaints there - looks like I could have fallen on my feet....
Been doing some research on here - this 'Beerworld' looks interesting! Got to go for it anyway - will be unemployed in a weeks time! |

ask where your apartment will be and let us know. i can give you a general idea of the area around it if you do. there's a wide variety of neighborhoods in uijeongbu ranging from very nice to terrible.
beerworld is a shingok option for foreigners, but there's a lot more going on around uijeongbu station. mix and tomsvill always draw a lot of foreigners (mostly dudes) and bar mia can be fun at times. beyond that, tons of little hofs and restautants around there.
in my opinion, one of the untapped treasures in uijeongbu is new york sub in ganeung-dong near camp red cloud and kyungmin college. it's a crying shame of a sandwich shop compared to home, but quite good by korean standards. the even have pastrami! |

I lived in Uijongbu for a year and it is ok. The cool thing about it is that its 45 minutes outside of Seoul by subway. |

45 minutes from downtown seoul by subway. less than 10 minutes to seoul itself. |

I have worked there before, and I feel the people are kinder than those from Seoul. More small-townish in nature, and friendly. Still close to Seoul, though. I also lived in Bundang, which was great. I think it's a great area to live. |

They will issue you an M-16 since you will be the first line of defense if North Korea decides to attack. Aside from that, its not a bad area. |
