Local supermarkets don't have anything. If I go to Seoul, where can I get some? |

E-marts sometimes have Oettinger for pretty cheap (or did when I was there a year and a half ago). German stuff.
Homeplus (?) has Tesco beer, which I haven't had but is apparently repackaged Grolsch. |

In the Mongolian building in Dongdaemun stadium (near exit #10) you can often get imported Russian (and Mongolian) alcohol of various types: beers, vodka etc.
But it might be too gopnik for your pallette however? |

Generally, most of the big chain hypermarkets (homeplus, e-mart, lotte mart, gs mart etc) will have something of a selection of European beers, even out in the sticks.
Obviously "good" & "cheap" will be a matter of opinion. Becks and Heineken are pretty widely available, usually between 2000-2500won a bottle, not that I'm much of a fan of either. The Tesco lager available at homeplus is sometimes also packaged as "Bavaria Lager", which is the Dutch (NOT Bavarian) company that brews it.
Having lived in Japan before, where even big supermarkets had nothing but Japanese beer (which isn't any more varied than Korean) I like it that big Korean supermarkets usually have at least a few foreign beers, and homeplus, in particular, has something approaching an impressive selection. But I am getting pretty bored with what's available and I haven't seen any new additions for quite a long time. |

Unfortunately E-Mart wasn't selling Oettinger the last couple times I was there (a month or so ago).
I've found big cans of Super Bock (Portugal) for 3300won at a little shop near Haebangchon. Used to be 3000 won but the guy must have noticed them flying off the shelf and jacked the price up a bit. |

Considerably more limited selection than most big supermarkets and even what they do have is not really much cheaper. |

Yeah, E-mart did this also with their Oettinger. When I first noticed it there about 9 months ago, they only stocked the Wheat and it was 1900 for a tall can. Pretty great price for a decent beer, so I was buying them 8 at a time. Then the price went as high as 2,500 a few months ago...and now in the past few weeks it has gone down to 2200, and they are also stocking the wheat AND Super Forte.
Lately I have been buying those kegs of Heineken for my fridge...nice to come home to that! First time I bought it the price was 39,000 (5 liter). the one I bought last week was 47,000 (same emart)
The day when Korea gets some imported pale ales will be the day I add to the "reasons to love Korea" thread. |
