Hey all,

Just thought I'd ask if there are any writers/aspiring writers on this site? I'm an aspiring writer myself. I've just started doing this as a hobby basically (maybe one day I'll publish something). Currently I'm focusing on fantasy and sci-fi short stories, trying to improve my writing (I don't expect to be an awesome writer right away). Eventually I may try to tackle a full-length novel.

So, are any of you writers? If so what do you write? Do you have any advice to share for the rest of us aspiring writers?

Yes I am, or I used to be. But I haven't written a story in months. These days I just keep a journal. Mostly I write descriptions of clouds, comparing them to eggplants and boats and stuff.

Check out Dan Simmons' "writing well" installments on his website. He has a background in education and teaches the craft very well.

I've been writing since early high school and actually majored in Journalism. Before coming to Korea, I worked at a newspaper, though my heart is really in feature writing (magazine/editorial, etc.). I prefer non-fiction and especially love doing profile pieces and travel writing. Coming to Korea has allowed to me to expand my freelance base tremendously. When I go back to the US next month I'll do it full time.

If you want to be published, my advice is to learn AP style (almost universal in the field of writing) and keep practicing. Also, read the work of others to see what styles work or don't work for you. When you're ready to submit query letters and assignments, realize that you'll probably have to start small, but don't let that stop you from shooting high. When I was a sophomore in college I decided to send out query letters and a resume to every top magazine I subscribed to. Most shot me down, but Glamour Magazine saw a shimmer of hope and I still work for them 3 years later. Smile

Hey! I'm a writer!

I'm moving to Busan on Saturday. My goal is to finish a novel before my year is up. I've never written one before but it's something I've always wanted to do. We'll see how that goes : )

I majored in Creative Writing and I've also written and performed stand up and sketch comedy for several years so I've got some experience. It's a lot of fun and what I eventually want to do for a living.

Advice for aspiring writers:

Stop calling yourself "aspiring" and write every day, even if it's only for 10 minutes. If you do that you will get better, plain and simple : )

All the best

I write screenplays. I stack them up and make furniture out of them.

Cool, I'm hoping to move to Busan myself next year after grad. Good luck with your novel.

Well said. And some of the best commentary I've seen for anyone hoping to create interesting material.
