Motels are behind Daegu station. There are two that are a little sleazier that are over on the East side near the clubs district, the folks at Holy Grill can point you toward them (great food there too). They're usually booked.
Commune is pretty loud, but there's usually something going on. Hang out near ... Sum-buk-dong (someone correct me on that) fire station, there's lots of stuff going on over there. Up near the park there's always something going on. |

Depends on what it is exactly that you want to do here in Daegu. If you are coming here to party in clubs..then yeah downtown would be your best bet. Personally if you want to experience the city, hitting up the same kinds of clubs and foreigner bars would not be much different than doing the same in another city.
Personally I think the motels near Dongdaegu stations are much nicer. Of course they are "love motels" since they don't have a grand lobby or restaurant, but most of them are pretty nice. I prefer one called "TOP" motel...room is about 65,000 a night, with sofa, huge flat screen tv, pc, jacuzzi tub (with motor) quite nice.
A short walk away is Pyeonghwa Sijang (Peace Market) which is quite famous in Daegu for their 닭똥집 (chicken ass) restaurants. Many folks, (mostly Koreans) head over there on weekends to fill up on chicken ass and beer before heading off to other parts of the city for adventure. I like the place because the ajummas stand outside and practically pull you into their restaurant, same as the ajummas at Nampodong in Busan. The atmosphere on the weekends is exciting..not a bunch of old men sitting around...mostly 20-30 somethings getting ready for a wild night out (or finishing a wild night out depending on the time in the evening you go)
Ariana Brau is a short cab ride from there. I'm sure almost every waegook in Daegu has been there...best beer in Daegu...brewed in the restaurant. I heard the place was undergoing renovations though, so it may be closed for the time being.
Downtown has several clubs, though honestly all I hear about them is that they are full of soldiers and fights break out every weekend. I believe club "Frog" is the hot place now..though some other place may have taken its place as the hotspot. If "night" clubs are your thing..check out either "Arabian Nights", or "Boss" night club. I've been to Arabian nights and it was fantastic. I have never been to "Boss" but many Koreans regard it as a better nightclub, though more expensive and the rumor is that "Boss" is the nightclub of choice of the Korean mafia in Daegu.
If you give us a better idea of how you would like to spend your weekend here(partying/taking in the sites) we may be able to give you some more specific info about places to check out. |

thanks for the info..
i'm not going up there to see the clubs. i want to check out what daegu has to offer that the other places don't. I'm coming from busan, so the appeal of clubs doesn't thrill me, i can get that down here.
i'm just not sure what is unique to daegu that i should see. the beer place sounds good, hopefully it'll be open, i'll check into that. |

Good deal. Here are a few points of Daegu you might be interested in -
1. Palgong Mountain - Most famous mountain in Daegu, with beautiful Buddah statue on top. This is a must see if coming to Daegu. Can be reached by city bus.
2. Woobang Land - Basically an amusement park (more geared to kids though) but they do offer a bungee jump from the top off Woobang tower (I cant recall the height, but its up there)
3. Seomun Sijang - Largest outdoor market in Daegu. You have probably seen outdoor markets before, but it is always an interesting place to check out. There was a fire about 2 years ago that burnt down hundreds of tents...so the place looks quite a bit different now
4.Spa Valley Waterpark - Just outside of Daegu, available by Daegu city bus (449) Not as great at California Beach or Everland, but if you are looking to get wet this is a decent place. They have a few pretty decent slides as well as a diving pool.
5. Arianu Brau - Restaurant in basement of Ariana Hotel, best beer in Daegu (brewed in house) They have a live band (pretty decent) and food is pretty good as well. If you go early in the evening and get the buffet, you can drink unlimited beer until 9pm. Again, a friend of mine close with the band mentioned that had been undergoing renovations and the band was now playing at a US army base until completion of work. Might have to check on that one.
6. Holy Grill - This place is the Holy Grail (pun intended) for many expats. Typical foreigner restaurant (owned by a Canadian I believe) but they do organize alot of stuff for the expat community, and a pretty friendly place. Not that a foreigner restaurant is special, but this one is special in Daegu.
7. Mak Chang street - If you are adventurous about food, and can stomach ingesting the guts of pigs and cows..this is a well known area of Daegu as well (although perhaps not with expats) One restaurant in particular (Bul Mak Chang) is quite well known and a popular place indeed (across from Daegu Opera House)
I will add more later as they come to me. Hope you enjoy your trip to Daegu. |
