The repair guys already told you what was needed...a new motherboard and/or video card. Although, I can't imagine the parts for it should be so hard to get. Most laptops are prebuilt from Taiwan regardless of brand.

The only alternative I can see is you having to send it back to the UK and then having it shipped back. Shipping costs, VAT, customs tax (I would imagine coming back into Korea) would probably be more than if you just bought a new laptop.

If it's used then no VAT or customs

Boys, what kind of advice are you giving this poor guy? Shocked Sure, you'll probably have to replace it. However, before replacing it, I'd open it up and make sure everything is seated correctly. It sounds like there are connectivity issues going on inside of the laptop.

Did the tech. guy open the laptop up and reconnect everything? How did he go about surmising what he surmised? Tech. guys here sometimes just look at things and think they know what's wrong. I hope the tech. guy that looked at your PC did take it apart to check it. Without actually looking at what's going on, it's difficult to ascertain what is going wrong.

Oops...you're 100% correct cubanlord. I was assuming that the tech guy would have opened up the laptop before telling the OP it was a bad motherboard/video card.

blackjack...VAT can still be applied to used items if they weren't purchased in the EU. I know OP's laptop was purchased in the UK and should be fine. But I wouldn't be surprised if he/she would have to prove that VAT was already paid.

Thank you everyone!

I'm going to get a second opinion when I find another hardware specialist in Daejeon (anyone know anywhere besides Technomart?)

I think this time I wont mention I droped it either. I will just say it doesn't work and see what they find

As far as I know (I was going through my K friend who was translating) the guy tried using other parts inside (ie. different hard drive etc) and he said nothing worked

but what I don't get is that he says he couldn't find a 'mainboard' (I'm assuming he is talking about the 'chipset'?) that would fit because it is philips from the UK. But looking at my specs above it says it is an Intel chipset. Isin't intel all around the world? don't they use those here in Korea too??

There is really nowhere for anything to go. Laptops don't have wiggle room and there is no doubt that the machine is bricked. Sure, you could have them open it up, but unless the problem is glaring (which it won't be), then its time to get a new one.

Ask them to salvage the hard drive; it may be fine and you can put it into an external USB case. Saves your information and gives you some storage.

True. I was thinking about my old laptop where the video card was a lttle lose. When I opened it up and just reconnected it (and cleaned the fan out). That solved the problem. I just hope this guy didn't look at it and just say something to try and get him to buy one from HIS store.
