Ive had my macbook since 2006. Last week, some powerade was spilled on it. It fried the logicboard and messed the LCD a bit. Rather pissed about it but accidents happen...
So I'm looking for some advice as to how to approach my situation. I have applecare and took it to the apple shop knowing it wouldnt be covered but just wanted to see if they could clean it for me or offer any help as it was still working when I took it to the shop. When I received it back, it no longer worked, they didn't fix the crack in the top of the case which was covered by warranty, and said it would be 800 000 won to fix. They didn't fix the case because they said they didn't know if it was the drink that did it or not. It's a known issue (I've had mine replaced 2 times already) but I didnt put up a fight as I have more important things to worry about.
Here is where I would like some advice. I've checked online and a logic board is around $400 dollars back in North America. I used www.ifixit.com in the past when I had my ibook to replace the logicboard and hard drive. Would a logicboard for my macbook (late 2006, intel C2D, 2.0) be available for purchase in Yongsan? I am not concerned about the LCD as I have a 24 inch monitor I can use with wireless keyboard and mouse through dvi. So just fixing the logicboard would allow me to use it once again.
I'm also thinking of putthing together a Hackintosh from Yongsan. I already have the monitor, keyboard, and mouse so for the price of a logicboard I could basically put together a computer. Does anyone have any experience with building a Hackintosh here? I know nothing about it really. How much did it cost? Does it run flawlessly? Id really like to get in touch with someone that has done this. PM me please! I plan on buying a new macbook pro in the summer when I travel back to Canada (with keyboard, screen, and case protector.. haha) so I dont want to shell out a lot of money. A desktop hackintosh is something that interests me though.
Thanks a lot for any insight and advice anyone might provide. Please, no PC vs. Mac debates. |

One thing that stinks about Mac and Korea is that most places here don't recognize AppleCare. They just want to overcharge you for parts because they know you can't go anywhere else.
Can you hold out w/o a lappy until your trip home?
What you could try if you cant wait is to mail it home and have AppleCare fix it at your home |

| Hi camaroclow. There are a couple of Apple Authorised Service Providers in Yongsan who MAY (and I stress that word) order and sell you just the part. You'll just have to ask the question. If you can't get it from them they will definitely carry out the full repair but yes, you'd be looking at paying upwards of 700,000 Won. If you've installed a logic board in an iBook before you'll find it much, much simpler in a plastic MacBook, so if you can't get the part in Yongsan then order it on-line from the States, but be prepared for the tax it will incur on arrival. As for the top case, you're absolutely right. It's covered even out of warranty, so I'd suggest waiting on that until a) you visit a country with a fully fledged Apple Store or b) they open one up in Korea, which although constantly rumored, actually will not happen anytime soon. Good luck! |
