I can't read Korean (yet). Help! How do I turn on my hot water? This is a picture of my thermostat: I'm pretty sure this thing can get me hot water of I use the right combo.

Looks to me like you just need to push the button at bottom left & wait 5 minutes.
Dont forget to turn it off again when you're done or you'll waste fuel. |

| The button with the international symbol for "This is the power switch" might be a good place to start. |

Thanks. I knew that was the power switch, but didn't want to turn on the house heating system by mistake (aren't the two systems seperate, and this panel controls both?). So if I hit the power button, will just the water heating be on or will I be heating the whole appartment? |

1 - Turn power on - Bottom Right Button
2. Find black switch on side left and set temperature of water. 고 means super hot..중 is medium and 저 is low
3.Press the button on the bottom left. This sets the control for only water.
The other buttons are for the heating in winter. The Black switch on the right controls whether you want only the floor heated (온둘), the air inside the room heated (실내). The final setting is 예약 which is a timer setting to control how long the room would stay warm if you left the house. You would use that setting and the knob in the middle to set how long you would want the heat to stay on..For example...say the room was cold and you went out for a few hours, you would use that setting to warm the place for a certain amount of time so it would be warm when you come back. |

Thanks so much. This is a very clear explanation and I now have hot water! I had to take a cold shower this morning: this was not fun.
So for the quarantine, am I allowed to travel or is it only a quarantine as regards the students: do I have to stay in this town for 7 days and away from the students, or can I travel to Seoul with some friends?

| There's no such thing as a quarantine. You can do whatever you want, except go to work. |

I should also mention, that you will still need to set the water temperature (black switch on left side) in winter. The heating is controlled by running hot water through pipes in the floor. The higher the water temp setting, the warmer your apartment will get (and the more fuel oil/gas/electricity you will use.
My first apartment in Korea used the old fuel oil system (kerosene) This basically works like a hot water heater in the sense that, it will constantly try to keep the water hot even when you are not using hot water (I lost alot of oil that way by forgetting to turn the control power off.
In the place I have now..it is all gas, and even if I leave the power on for the controller, it will not use energy to make hot water unless I actually turn on the sink or shower for hot water. (To go from completely cold water to hot water in less than 30 seconds is an awesome thing)
If your place uses fuel oil, BE SURE to turn the power of the entire control OFF when you finish shower or otherwise using hot water. |

+1
I have a newer, on-demand SK boiler, and keeping it on 24x7 has a negligible effect on the gas bill.
Especially when you consider that I have a gas oven. Which I love very much. |
