so i just got my arc card, and im looking to get a cell phone. the one i want is the haptic 8m http://kr.samsungmobile.com/product/anycall/product/overview.do?pdModel=SCH-W740&pdGroup=100001 i plan on getting it this weekend. but i just told my friend who i will go with to get a cell phone that koreans dont like giving foreigners their nice cell phones or that i might not be able to get one since i only have a e-2 visa. there any truth to that, or is there any place you know that doesnt care about that bs and will sell the phone to anyone willing to pay them the money?

Yeah, I can vouch, Koreans are really really strange to foreigners sometimes. I was at the bank yesterday and telling me that I could not do a variety of things since I nor my parents were born in Korea.

Best bet if you want a fancy Korean phone is to have a Korean to go with you. And you can always get a lower price than what they tell you...

Yes. It is easier and probably cheaper to get a Korean friend to buy the phone in their name. Afterwards, they can change the billing details to your own bank account.

for future reference, i was able to get a phone from ktf-show. there was no deposit fee like how sk has. but being a foreigner i had to pay up front the whole amount of the phone, but i was able to get a small discount on it. i suggest doing research when buying a phone, because one store gave me a price over the msrp.

Yeah that is the real problem. As a foreigner you have to pay upfront the full cost of the phone. Koreans can buy the same 500,000 phone as you and pay the same monthly rate, but they have the option of signing a 2-3 year contract and getting the phone for almost free. You can't have that option.

On the other hand, Koreans probably aren't going to sell the phone in three months and move to another country. ^^

my korean friend gave me his old phone to use. how do i go about putting the phone in my name and either picking up a monthly contract or doing the pay as you go thing?
(it is LG telecom model if that matters)

Anybody try bringing an unlocked phone from the states and putting the Korean SIM card in that phone?

Do phones purchased in Korea only have a Korean Language interface? Is there an English option in the software?

since we're on the topic, is it cheaper to get a phone once i'm in korea or should i just pay an extra 5 bucks on top of my current phone payment and get international service? (i pay about 40 bucks a month)

you right greasy... just went to an LG store with my korean friend. paid a fee to activate the phone and gave my bank information. was trippin at first cause i heard rumors of a large deposit or having to link the phone to my passport. dont wanna do that.
