Anybody know if Japanese products are cheaper in Japan than in the U.S.
(unlike how Samsung products are more expensive in Korea than in the U.S.)
I figure I'll take a short vacation to Japan while I'm in Korea and wondered if they have a free capitalist market or do they have a Japanese protectionism attitude like Korea does with their products.
I'm looking for a small HD 3 chip camcorder. |

| I can't see how, with the Yen being so strong compared to the dollar. |

I've heard of people getting some really good deals when in Japan, even with the exchange rate. But I don't know where they were shopping, because in the general malls the prices are just as high.
To the OP: What are your needs? There is an amazing amount of HD cams available now. Sticking with the major manufactures is a good idea. (Cannon, Panasonic, etc.) An HD cam can go anywhere from 150 bucks to as much as a medium sized house. |

| Just home videos mostly... no specific needs. Perhaps I don't even need to go into HD. |

I thought all non-Korean brands are marked up so high that you're essentially forced to buy Korean electronics. Can you still find a good deal on a Canon? |

Anybody know if those FLIP cameras are as popular in Korea as they are in the States? Small, very basic, easy to use, USB plug and play video transfer... |

I have the VADO HD camera. I love it, although the big beef I have with it is that s not a steady lens, and it shakes incredibly easily. It's so darned small! It cost me $150 on Amazon. The VADO has a wider lens, and I figured I'd put it on a tripod more. I might have gone with the Flip HD the 2nd time around, because I think it has image stabilization (seemed to in the store, anyway).
Stay away from the Kodak model, as it makes blurry video.
Here are some videos I made, and keep in mind that I also edited the video in Moviemaker and exported as .wmv, which probably caused a slight loss in quality. I exported as Xbox 720p from moviemaker:

You can buy the Japaneses import of many versions of cameras. Although this will mean that you can't have it serviced in Korea and would have to send it to Japan if it broke. But for many the saved money is well worth it. |

HD can be a pain to edit sometimes if your hardware is not top of the line. So maybe a high quality SD camera might be better suited for you. What computer hardware do you have? Also what is your budget? There are some exciting hybrid still/camcorder versions coming out. |

Your video quality is pretty good for YouTube. I don't know how it gets transcoded when posting to YouTube, but usually there's a lot of loss in image quality. Vimeo tends to retain image quality better than YouTube. Have you tried Vimeo?
Also, since you're uploading in Korea, do they make you enter your registration / Alien Registration number to track your posts like they do with Korean natives who blog?
Also, is that your voice on the video? It's a good announcer/narrator's voice. Are you trying to start a career as an American tourist guide for Arirang TV? |

Agreed, that is good quality for YouTube. Mine always look like crap when I upload to there. Agree about the voice too. |

My Vado does a really great job with SD video. The nice thing is it's the size of a cell phone. I can carry it with me anywhere. Having a camera available at any time to capture the shot is a huge plus, rather than having to purposefully dig one out and carry it around.
|
Yeah, I like the idea of a low-profile video camera. Whipping out a cell phone sized camera is less conspicuous to angry drunks on the street I'm going to have fun recording.
BTW, why is the Flip UltraHD 30 bucks less than the Flip MinoHD when the UltraHD has twice as much memory, slightly better video compression, and has a rechargeable AA battery pack that can be swapped out with regular AA batteries if needed.
Anybody know of a Flip or Vado like device that lets you use CF or SD cards instead of (or as well as) the built in memory? |
