Was wondering what the official role of the co-teacher is in the public schools. Stuff I've read online ranges from co-teachers that do absolutely nothing to great partners that really compliment the teacher. As the English teach are you expected to take the lead and tell them what to do? Do they fill in for you when you're out on vacation? (Sorry, but I'm still a little green to all of this.) |

yes, it is a full range. some are amazing and help you with lesson planning and do great discipline in the classroom, and others don't even show up for your lesson and consider english class their breaktime.
it's up to you to communicate with them and be really upfront about your expectations for prep and during class. a lot of co-teachers are great teachers and don't have any handle on english so some native teachers prefer them to just do discipline.
they don't fill in for you on vacation because you're not allowed to take your vacation days when school is in session. if you call in sick, they are expected to teach for you by themselves.
hope that helps to clarify! |

What "official" role? That's like asking what's the official role of a computer or a desk. |

Sorry, I can't stop laughing!
You may do that to show the co-teacher that you know something about teaching. Then the co-teach will tell you what to do and you do that. They do have some ministry guidelines to meet. I want to do TPR but it don't meet the min guide, so we don't. |

Maybe at elementary school. Most NETs I know teach pretty well whatever they want. |

True enough. No, you don't have to do what the co-t tells you to do. |
