Well... This is half a late night speil... So bear with me... I've been here close to two years without a break. Haven't been home and only taken a short vacation to Thailand and China, when Korean holidays permit.
Fact is. I'm exhausted. Completely and utterly stuffed. I love Korea. For those who sometimes read my posts, Koreans get up my nose sometimes and that has been reflected in the odd post, but for the most part I enjoy their company and have some good friends.
Am coming back for year number three though. Am finishing my contract in the next three months and am taking a runner for two months with the G/F.
Now I've been overseas for a long time. Been to a lot of countries. But Korea fascinates me but infuriates me to the point of madness.
I have no patience left with my kids. I am sick to death of being the incomprehensible foreigner. I've tried hard to teach them. Just today I went over something that I've taught once again. Sometimes feel like they are always reverting back to square one. My Director doesn't speak a lot of English and she is giving me the turds lately.
I am sick of the way this place smells. Of endless BBQ restaurants, stupid drivers and the same stuff in every city. Sick of the bali bali crap. Everythings got to be quickly quickly. Just tired I suppose.
Don't get me wrong. I know that after a break I'll feel a hell of a lot better. I know that... After the four day trip to China I felt happy to be back. That only lasted a few weeks and after the trip to Thailand I just started to pine for warm weather, cold beer and a newspaper on a Sunday. I'm dreaming of going to the pub at home getting a pot of VB, opening a paper and having a sit for a while.
So... Any ideas... Just for the next few months. I am going to the gym in the morning. There is an outdoor one in the hills behind my apartment. But even that doesn't help.
All I want to do is crawl up and wait for the time to pass.
Thanks. |

Also I recommend listening to Life During Wartime (Talking Heads)
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco,
this ain't no fooling around
This ain't no mudd club, or C. B. G. B.,
I ain't got time for that now
Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, PA?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
somebody might see you up there
I got some groceries, some peant butter,
to last a couple of days
But I ain't got no speakers, ain't got no
headphones, ain't got no records to play
Why stay in college? Why go to night school?
Gonna be different this time
Can't write a letter, can't send a postcard,
I can't write nothing at all
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco, |

Try to give yourself at least one good thing to look forward to at the end of evey week..some kind of special treat. That way maybe the 3 months will go by a lot faster. I was fine until I had only 2 months left and then suddenly I nearly cracked. That 2 months seemed so long that I just wanted to quit even tho' it meant I would lose my bonus. The other teachers at the school talked me out of it.
Maybe you should think about teaching adults when you come back. You might be burning out with the kids. At least if the adults are pissing you off by not working you can tell them that. More often than not they like you better for it. It makes them feel you really care. The month that I tried to give up smoking and was suffering from withdrawals I had no patience with my students. Everytime they annoyed me I let them know about it. That month I had the highest rate of reregistrations ever.
Anyway I hope it passes painlessly enough for you. Enjoy your holiday, it sounds as tho' you really deserve it. |

I hear you man...I have been teaching the same kids for 4 months now. They are starting to get on my nerves. Its not just teaching the same kids but its because i teach kids that are around 7 years old for my first 4 lessons. That is exhausting. Then i go on to teach older kids as the day progresses. Teaching people of different ages is hard. Got to go from being a nut and really happy and active to more into teaching mode.
My flatmate has only just got here and she is teaching the kids in between really young and older kids. They are the easiest to teach.
Little kids are fun but trying to keep them entertained is hard. Also lost my voice yesterday from the shouting over their screaming.
Travel Korea is my advice. Get in a bus and just go somewhere. Easier if you are not in Seoul. Being in Naju i can go virtually anywhere because it only takes 5 minutes to get out of.
Try not to go out drinking everyweekend. Do something different. Maybe take up tantric (Spelling not right maybe) S E X!!! |
