I am going to buy a US$2,000 bike on my trip. When I bring it to Korea will they make me pay a duty when I go through customs?
If so, how do they calculate it? |

Not if you ride it before you leave. If it's an offroad bike, get the tires dirty but there is no need to go too crazy. If you spill a bit of sport drink near the bottle cages and it has a bit of grime on it that might help too. But, I brought my bikes in and out several times with no trouble.
Be warned that departing to some countries (Australia I've heard) may require you to scrub the tires of your MTB before entering due to agriculture concerns. |

Are we talking about a motorbike or a bicycle?
If were talking a bicycle, what do you need a 2000$ one for? Are you gonna ride across China or something? |

Also, you do know that some airlines will rape you for the shipping of your bike? Delta is currently the worst, have charged some people as much as $300 one way. |

its completely random - how much they'll charge you for over-size baggage. i went to the airport totally prepared to spend up to $300 for my bike box and paid nothing.
also, seconded on the "dirty" up your bike idea. the shop i used to work at was located right next to ohare international in chicago so we had a lot of international travelers stopping by to pick up hard to find bikes in their respective countries. the shop boys would receive the pleasure of getting to hit the local cx trail during their lunch break and "use up" the bike before we'd tear it down and pack it up. |

Thanks for the info. I'll be hitting the trails, so my rig will definitely be mud-ed up a bit. |

I'm flying Singapore Air, so I better check out their bike fee. Thanks for the heads up. Getting raped is the last thing I want to happen. It's ironic though because I'll be spending my vacation raping some virgin trails.
Does anybody know Singapore Air's bike box fee?

1) Bicycle
2) Because that's the most my wife will let me spend at this time. Also, when I bomb through the mountains I don't want to be on a total piece of shhhh. It is a nice day today!
3) I'm going to ride the hills in Korea.
(P.S. $2,000 is an entry level price for a full suspension bike.) |
